In October 2022 the City of Perth Amboy was selected for a Transit Hub Volunteer Planning Project. The selection was made by the two organizations that would oversee the work, the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, and the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association. The work is an ongoing partnership between the two organizations to encourage stronger transit hubs at existing transit stations in New Jersey. Perth Amboy’s rail station is on NJ TRANSIT’s North Jersey Coast Line. The station is ideally located in the center of the City’s retail commercial district at Smith Street and Elm Street.
The city completed several planning studies of the station area in 2013, however, there had been little implementation of the studies long list of recommendations. Significant changes in personnel in the city government including elected officials and agency personnel, along with the Covid pandemic interfered with advancing the strategies. The volunteer planners in the new current effort were asked to review the studies from 2013, select the strategies that the city still wanted to implement, and, through an updated public involvement program select the strategies most favorable to the city’s residents.
