Description

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is seeking candidates for the position of Planner Trainee
within the Bureau of Statewide Strategies, Division of Statewide Planning, under the Assistant Commissioner of
Statewide Planning, Safety & Capital Investment (SPSCI). Planner Trainees are assigned a 40-hour work week.
Current starting salary is $56,253.35 and after six months is $58,817.70.

The NJDOT currently offers a telework program, this position may qualify for up to 2 days of remote work at your
primary residence outside of your assigned NJDOT work location. To be eligible for the program, you must first
successfully complete your 4-month working test period. Please note that the telework program is not guaranteed
and is based on operational need.

Bureau of Statewide Strategies in the Division of Statewide Planning is responsible for numerous key planning
functions, including delivering New Jersey’s Long Range Statewide Transportation Plan (LRSTP), the Transportation
Asset Management Plan (TAMP), coordinating the Department’s Transportation Performance Management (TPM)
activities, maintaining and updating Appendix B of the State Highway Access Management Code, and processing access
classification change requests. The Bureau of Multimodal Strategies operates under the NJDOT Division of Statewide
Planning and is funded primarily by the Federal State Planning & Research (SPR) Program and secondarily by State
Transportation Trust Fund. The bureau develops, produces and manages the federally mandated Statewide
Active Transportation Plan and Statewide Freight Plan and leads Statewide initiatives including the Transit Village
Initiative, planning activities for the Target Zero Commission, among other areas. The bureau is also responsible for the
oversight and advancement of bicycles, pedestrians, freight, transit access, and related programs, projects, planning
consultant services, as well as the advancement of goals developed and recommended in the State’s long – range
transportation plans.

Job Description
The Planner Trainee candidate should be prepared to do the following under close supervision:

  • Learn to independently prepare graphics and visual presentation materials suitable for meetings and public
    stakeholder dissemination.
  • Participate constructively with professionals in transportation planning studies and forums in the region.
  • Facilitate communication between multiple government agencies and consultants to develop and execute
    projects/programs.
  • Represent NJDOT on a number of working groups and committees at the regional, state and federal level.
  • Conduct research, participate in site visits, and handle data requests from various divisions, both internally and externally.
  • Monitor the work of consultant contracts and task orders with attention to detail.
  • Assist in implementing recommendations from long – range transportation plans, by performing quantitative and
    qualitative research, analysis, and evaluations.
  • Learn to review and propose changes/upgrades to the existing regulations to facilitate transportation in the State.
  • Research grant sources, prepare and review grant applications.
  • Participate in public outreach activities, prepare correspondence material, and respond to requests for information.
