Perth Amboy Transit Hub

In January 2023, the City of Perth Amboy was selected to participate in a Transit Hub Volunteer Planning Project. The initiative is overseen by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) and the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-NJ), who have partnered to promote stronger, more vibrant transit hubs at existing transit stations throughout New Jersey.

Perth Amboy’s train station, located on NJ TRANSIT’s North Jersey Coast Line, sits in a prime location at the heart of the city’s retail commercial district, at the intersection of Smith Street and Elm Street.

Although the city conducted several planning studies focused on the station area in 2013, implementation of the recommended strategies had been limited. Contributing factors included significant turnover among city officials and agency staff, as well as disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of the current volunteer planning effort, the team was tasked with reviewing the past studies studies, identifying strategies the city still wished to pursue, and—through an updated public engagement process—determining which strategies were most supported by residents.

The two attached documents reflect the final outcomes of this effort. The first is a condensed presentation shared with the City Council and the public during a meeting held on March 13, 2024. The second is a comprehensive report containing additional background, analysis, and findings not included in the public presentation.
