Planner – Land Development

Somerset County is seeking an entry-level Planner to join the Land Development Section of the County Planning Division. This position offers an excellent opportunity for recent graduates and early-career planning professionals to gain hands-on experience reviewing development applications, supporting sustainable growth, and working collaboratively with municipal officials, applicants, and County staff.
The Planner plays an important role in the County’s development review process by evaluating subdivision and site plan applications, conducting planning research, preparing reports and recommendations, and helping ensure that proposed development is consistent with County land use policies and regulations.
This position provides meaningful professional experience in public-sector planning while contributing to projects that shape the future of Somerset County’s communities.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Review subdivision and site plan applications for consistency with County land development standards and policies.
- Prepare written reports, correspondence, memoranda, resolutions, and recommendations related to development review activities.
- Conduct research and prepare reports supporting land development, preservation, and other planning initiatives.
- Coordinate and communicate with applicants, municipal officials, consultants, and County staff throughout the development review process.
- Represent the County Planning Division at public meetings, professional conferences, and intergovernmental meetings as assigned.
- Participate in cross-departmental initiatives that support broader County planning goals.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, Public Policy, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Zero (0) to two (2) years of professional planning experience in a governmental, consulting, or nonprofit environment.
- Basic understanding of planning principles, including land use, transportation, and community planning.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Exposure to GIS or data visualization tools.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in planning or a related field.
- Familiarity with New Jersey planning statutes, regulations, or county/municipal master plans.
- Experience with public engagement or community outreach.
