Planner – Land Development

This position provides professional planning support to the Land Development Section of the Somerset County Planning Division. The Planner assists with subdivision and site plan reviews to ensure compliance with County land use regulations and policies. The position processes land development applications, supporting growth and sustainable development across the County.
Essential Functions
- Review subdivision and site plan applications for consistency with County land development standards.
- Prepare written reports, correspondence, and recommendations for the County Planning Division and staff.
- Conduct research and prepare specialized reports related to land development, preservation and other planning initiatives as directed.
- Represent the County at public meetings, professional conferences and intergovernmental forums.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Section Head of Land Development, Director of Planning, and/or the Director of Engineering & Planning.
General Responsibilities
- Prepare correspondence, memorandums, resolutions, reports, and analyses related to development review and planning activities.
- Utilize Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Access, to support document preparation and data management.
- Maintain strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills to effectively coordinate with applicants, municipal officials, and staff.
- Participate in cross-departmental collaboration to support broader County planning goals and initiatives.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in urban/Regional Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, Public Policy, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Zero (0) to two (2) years of professional planning experience in a governmental, consulting, or non-profit environment.
- Basic understanding of planning principles (land use, transportation, community/resiliency).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office; exposure to GIS or data visualization tools.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred
- Master’s degree in planning or related field
- Familiarity with New Jersey planning statutes/regulations or county/municipal master plans
- Experience in public engagement or outreach
Salary: $50,000-$60,000/year
