DESCRIPTION:This session is a primer to explore the integration of sustainable energy strategies into the urban context\, starting from the earliest stages of planning to ensure heightened environmental performance at the building\, site and community scale. Strategic energy planning\, the setting of realistic targets and goals and developing a systematic strategic plan for clean energy integration and implementation will also be examined. A systems-based approach to town planning which includes an analysis of eight essential town systems: social\, commerce\, mobility\, food\, water\, waste\, energy and biological\, will set the framework for the discussion. Suggestions for incremental\, phased-in and decentralized strategies that include clean energy as a part of redevelopment projects will be discussed. Specific topical areas of discussion include: Incorporating technology policy into urban planning\, New transportation policies that can positively and negatively affect energy usage\, Urban form and design strategies that can harness natural energy\, Tool kit ideas for specific design issues\, Code and regulatory suggestions for integrated clean energy. Upon completion of the session\, attendees will understand: Energy issues and their relationship to town planning and design\, The relationship between holistic town planning and energy systems engineering\, The key elements in developing a strategic energy plan for a complex organization\, The variety of program options available to planners when attempting to affect energy usage in a community\, and How strategic energy plans can combine concepts of efficiency improvements with land use policies. DESCRIPTION:This webinar introduces the H+T Index\, a tool developed by the Center for Neighborhood Technology that is helping illuminate the hidden costs of unsustainable development. The H+T Index documents the transportation costs associated with a home’s location for 337 U.S. metropolitan areas by pricing the tradeoffs between housing and transportation costs that buyers and renters make when choosing where to live. Compact\, walkable\, mixed-use communities with convenient access to public transit and employment centers sometimes appear expensive because of higher housing costs — but the H+T Index shows that these places can often make for more affordable living than lower-density exurban communities because households can own fewer cars and still maintain a high quality of life. In addition to providing household cost data at the Census block group level\, the H+T Index also provides household vehicle miles traveled estimates\, access to transit\, proximity to jobs\, and household greenhouse gas emissions from driving. DESCRIPTION:Speakers for this webinar will be from the U.S. EPA-Chesapeake Bay Office\, the State of Maryland Department of Planning\, and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.  Cleanup efforts have been underway since the early 1980s through a partnership between the states of Delaware\, Maryland\, New York\, Pennsylvania\, Virginia\, and West Virginia\, the District of Columbia\, and the U.S. EPA.  Within the last two years\, to meet legal requirements\, the EPA has taken a stronger role in directing cleanup efforts with equal but full emphasis on non-point sources\, point sources\, and air quality.
