DESCRIPTION:Over the last several decades\, urban sprawl\, white flight\, land use regulations\, and consolidation and concentration in the food retail sector have created grocery gaps in urban and rural communities. As a result\, many communities lack access to healthy and affordable food. One community solution is healthy food retailing through existing outlets. Healthy food retailing is an economic development strategy that increases sales of healthy foods through distributing\, stocking and marketing healthy items in affected communities. This session will cover the basic new markets model framework\, best practices\, local policy and planning priorities for healthy food retailing. DESCRIPTION:In preparing for introduction of street car service along Columbia Pike\, Arlington County is completing a new planning effort for existing multi-family communities. Increasing rents are already pricing out lower-income residents\, and those pressures are expected to accelerate with the higher gas prices\, highway congestion and that make living in transit communities so attractive. The plan’s goal is to preserve or replace all of the housing serving households with incomes up to 60 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI) and one-half of the housing serving households at 80 percent of AMI. Market and financial analysis is helping to guide the plan so that the density provisions for new units will support financial feasibility\, increasing the likelihood that development will occur. DESCRIPTION:Genentech’s employee transportation program\, gRide\, provides employees with flexible and convenient services and incentives designed to support commuting by other modes than driving alone. The multifaceted program includes cash incentives\, a BikeShare program and a fleet of over 50 motor coach and intra-campus shuttles. Last year the gRide program eliminated over 20 million vehicle miles traveled on San Francisco Bay Area’s roadways and over 14 million pounds of CO2 from the atmosphere. In addition to reducing VMT and GHG emissions\, the program has significantly reduced employees’ time\, money and stress spent on commuting. This session will inform the APA community of how the program has progressed from its initiation with the Master Plan approval in 2006 to today’s success in reducing the employee drive-alone rate. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Opportunities in Complete Streets & Green Infrastructure (CM | 2.0)
DESCRIPTION:The Molly Ann Brook Rain Barrel and Rain Garden Initiative differs from traditional environmental planning and protection efforts in that it is a community-based approach to environmental quality\, which relies on public involvement rather than costly engineering solutions. Led by the Passaic County Planning Department in cooperation with the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Essex & Passaic Counties\, the WMA-4 AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassadors\, the Boroughs of North Haledon\, Haledon and Prospect Park\, the City of Paterson\, and the Rutgers Water Resources Program\, the Molly Ann Brook Rain Barrel & Rain Garden initiative implements low impact development and sustainable stormwater management tools to improve water quality. The project was funded by a 2008 Section 319(h) grant from the NJ DEP to improve the impaired water quality of the Molly Ann Brook\, a subwatershed of the Passaic River Basin. This grant provided funding to pursue two best management practices recommended in the Molly Ann Brook Watershed Management Plan\, the targeted installation of rain barrels and rain gardens. The County has purchased 650 rain barrels and\, to date\, has distributed 605 of these rain barrels free of charge to residents and public entities within the subwatershed. In addition\, three rain gardens have been installed on public lands\, and five more will be installed in the spring of 2012. The project helps alleviate a critical environmental justice issue by distributing free rain barrels\, which retail for $150 each\, to residents in the low-moderate income municipalities of Haledon\, Prospect Park\, and Paterson\, New Jersey; 56% of the rain barrels were distributed in these municipalities. Further\, this project implementation can serve as an example for other communities throughout the state. It is an easily replicable\, low-cost planning solution for stormwater management\, with the long-term impact of changing how residents approach environmental conservation. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Introduction to the H+T Affordability Index and Applications in Planning (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar introduces the H+T Index\, a tool developed by the Center for Neighborhood Technology that is helping illuminate the hidden costs of unsustainable development. The H+T Index documents the transportation costs associated with a home’s location for 337 U.S. metropolitan areas by pricing the tradeoffs between housing and transportation costs that buyers and renters make when choosing where to live. Compact\, walkable\, mixed-use communities with convenient access to public transit and employment centers sometimes appear expensive because of higher housing costs — but the H+T Index shows that these places can often make for more affordable living than lower-density exurban communities because households can own fewer cars and still maintain a high quality of life. In addition to providing household cost data at the Census block group level\, the H+T Index also provides household vehicle miles traveled estimates\, access to transit\, proximity to jobs\, and household greenhouse gas emissions from driving. Three finance exercises involving realistic real estate developments will then be conducted. The first will demonstrate a simple project involving equity and debt but that does not involve public participation. The second will be a project that requires a public-private partnership and the consequent effects on the finances of both parties. DESCRIPTION:Speakers for this webinar will be from the U.S. EPA-Chesapeake Bay Office\, the State of Maryland Department of Planning\, and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.  Cleanup efforts have been underway since the early 1980s through a partnership between the states of Delaware\, Maryland\, New York\, Pennsylvania\, Virginia\, and West Virginia\, the District of Columbia\, and the U.S. EPA.  Within the last two years\, to meet legal requirements\, the EPA has taken a stronger role in directing cleanup efforts with equal but full emphasis on non-point sources\, point sources\, and air quality. State strategies have been submitted to EPA and the states are working with local governmental agencies including regional planning agencies in developing local watershed plans to meet EPA requirements.  The Regional and Intergovernmental Planning Division will host this session.  A further webinar on this Chesapeake Bay Restoration Program with speakers from Pennsylvania\, Virginia\, and the EPA will be held in late July. \nClick here to register:  https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/888461339
