SUMMARY:Webinar: Cultural Sustainability: Heritage Preservation and Place-making
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n“Heritage Preservation” acknowledges the value of historic buildings and landmarks while sensitive to the stories\, institutions\, and cultural imprint of incumbent residents within our communities. Redevelopment initiatives that compromise cultural heritage are not sustainable due to the loss of assets that are irreplaceable. For this webinar\, award-winning developers from urban and tribal communities will discuss how to successfully strike a balance between economic development and the sustainable management of cultural assets. They will explain how just “being green” is a restrictive interpretation for sustainability. Participants will learn ways sustainability can conserve resources; respect local culture\, heritage and tradition; focus on quality balanced with economic opportunity for residents; optimize the visitor experience by applying a creative mix of cultural\, natural and historic resources. The webinar will reveal successful placemaking is not measured in numbers alone\, but also in the integrity of the experience that contributes to economic viability of the institutions\, resources\, community and its residents. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Understanding Urban Goods Movements (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:This National Academies of Sciences study produced a comprehensive\, concise guide for public decision makers and land use planners on the impacts land use design and policies and regulations on freight movements within urban areas. The guidebook is written in a jargon-free manner and explains why it is important for local elected and appointed officials to understand how goods move within their urban area\, why efficient movement is critical to their community’s urban quality of life\, how land use codes\, policies and regulation impact urban goods movement. The guidebook includes: an overview of who\, what\, how and why freight moves in an urban area; twelve original supply chain descriptions with narratives (beverage supply chain shown below) to help decision makers and planners understand the impacts of local zoning policies and regulations; examples of the impacts of regulations; a process for integrating an urban goods movement study into the work of a planning office; information on how to use freight data; examples of a variety of urban goods movement problems and solutions that they can use; and nine case study of urban areas that have changed zoning codes\, regulations and policies to improve freight movements in their urban area. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: The New Markets Model: Making a Case for Healthy Retail Strategies (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Over the last several decades\, urban sprawl\, white flight\, land use regulations\, and consolidation and concentration in the food retail sector have created grocery gaps in urban and rural communities. As a result\, many communities lack access to healthy and affordable food. One community solution is healthy food retailing through existing outlets. Healthy food retailing is an economic development strategy that increases sales of healthy foods through distributing\, stocking and marketing healthy items in affected communities. This session will cover the basic new markets model framework\, best practices\, local policy and planning priorities for healthy food retailing. We will share experiences from healthy retail projects and examples of assessment-based policy recommendations in Ohio and Washington. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Preserving Affordable Housing in a Transit Corridor (CM |1.5)
DESCRIPTION:In preparing for introduction of street car service along Columbia Pike\, Arlington County is completing a new planning effort for existing multi-family communities. Increasing rents are already pricing out lower-income residents\, and those pressures are expected to accelerate with the higher gas prices\, highway congestion and that make living in transit communities so attractive. The plan’s goal is to preserve or replace all of the housing serving households with incomes up to 60 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI) and one-half of the housing serving households at 80 percent of AMI. Market and financial analysis is helping to guide the plan so that the density provisions for new units will support financial feasibility\, increasing the likelihood that development will occur. The implementation plan incorporates a wide variety of affordable housing tools. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Genentech - Your Commute Just Became Easier (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Genentech’s employee transportation program\, gRide\, provides employees with flexible and convenient services and incentives designed to support commuting by other modes than driving alone. The multifaceted program includes cash incentives\, a BikeShare program and a fleet of over 50 motor coach and intra-campus shuttles. Last year the gRide program eliminated over 20 million vehicle miles traveled on San Francisco Bay Area’s roadways and over 14 million pounds of CO2 from the atmosphere. In addition to reducing VMT and GHG emissions\, the program has significantly reduced employees’ time\, money and stress spent on commuting. This session will inform the APA community of how the program has progressed from its initiation with the Master Plan approval in 2006 to today’s success in reducing the employee drive-alone rate. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Opportunities in Complete Streets & Green Infrastructure (CM | 2.0)
DESCRIPTION:The Molly Ann Brook Rain Barrel and Rain Garden Initiative differs from traditional environmental planning and protection efforts in that it is a community-based approach to environmental quality\, which relies on public involvement rather than costly engineering solutions. Led by the Passaic County Planning Department in cooperation with the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Essex & Passaic Counties\, the WMA-4 AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassadors\, the Boroughs of North Haledon\, Haledon and Prospect Park\, the City of Paterson\, and the Rutgers Water Resources Program\, the Molly Ann Brook Rain Barrel & Rain Garden initiative implements low impact development and sustainable stormwater management tools to improve water quality. The project was funded by a 2008 Section 319(h) grant from the NJ DEP to improve the impaired water quality of the Molly Ann Brook\, a subwatershed of the Passaic River Basin. This grant provided funding to pursue two best management practices recommended in the Molly Ann Brook Watershed Management Plan\, the targeted installation of rain barrels and rain gardens. The County has purchased 650 rain barrels and\, to date\, has distributed 605 of these rain barrels free of charge to residents and public entities within the subwatershed. In addition\, three rain gardens have been installed on public lands\, and five more will be installed in the spring of 2012. The project helps alleviate a critical environmental justice issue by distributing free rain barrels\, which retail for $150 each\, to residents in the low-moderate income municipalities of Haledon\, Prospect Park\, and Paterson\, New Jersey; 56% of the rain barrels were distributed in these municipalities. Further\, this project implementation can serve as an example for other communities throughout the state. It is an easily replicable\, low-cost planning solution for stormwater management\, with the long-term impact of changing how residents approach environmental conservation. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: "Finding Common Ground: The Digital Treatment of Electronic Signs" (CM Pending | 1.0)
DESCRIPTION:Digital electronic signs have demonstrated a strong ability to increase results for commercial and community-oriented purposes. However\, many communities are relatively unfamiliar with this rapidly-developing technology\, and are concerned that these kinds of signs will create aesthetic\, safety and enforcement problems for their cities and fellow citizens. \nNearly all stakeholders struggling with digital electronic signs and their regulation often have the same questions: \n\nWhat really are these digital electronic signs and how do they work?\nIs there any way for the community-at-large to actually benefit from these kinds of signs?\nHow do we allow them without “looking like Las Vegas\,” or negatively impacting community safety?\nHow do we regulate them in ways that are understandable and enforceable\, without having to hire additional staff?\n\nHosted by James Carpentier\, AICP and presented by Wendy Moeller\, AICP\, and Mike Freeborg\, Director of Government Relations for YESCO\, the webinar “Finding Common Ground” answers these questions and others\, while providing practical\, solution-focused guidance that can set the foundation for regulations that can leverage this technology while protecting community aesthetic values and safety concerns. \nThis webinar is being offered on Thursday\, March 15 from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. EST. One (1) AICP Certification Maintenance credit is Pending Approval. Please contact james.carpentier@signs.org to register for this complimentary educational event.

SUMMARY:Webinar: New Directions in Planning (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:In Maryland we are leading the nation in not only thinking about change\, but in preparing for the future. This session will highlight the emerging importance of development economics in realizing land use visions. The linkage between land use plans\, implementation strategies and revenue generation for delivering infrastructure\, will be discussed. Understanding revenue projections by land use is an important link to infrastructure staging keyed to development scenarios and the ability of builders and governments to deliver the infrastructure necessary to ensure land use plans are sustainable. Case studies will be used to illustrate how municipal finances and the impact of development on economic sustainability can serve as a mechanism for moving a land use vision forward from concept to reality. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Webinar: Community Mobility (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:By the year 2030\, oil’s scarcity\, cost\, and environmental damage may make its use as transport fuel the exception rather than the rule. While long-distance movement of people and goods has its own challenges that high speed rail\, alternative fuels and modal shifts must address\, this presentation looks at movements within a community. What will 2030 look like if we shift from a local transportation system that is overwhelmingly dominated by the private vehicle\, to a scenario dominated by community mobility? The webcast participant will get a glimpse of twenty years into the future for what can be done to see how to provide mobility in our communities. Five modes of local transportation are presented: walking\, bicycling\, sharing public vehicles\, sharing private vehicles\, and driving. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Webinar: Introduction to the H+T Affordability Index and Applications in Planning (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar introduces the H+T Index\, a tool developed by the Center for Neighborhood Technology that is helping illuminate the hidden costs of unsustainable development. The H+T Index documents the transportation costs associated with a home’s location for 337 U.S. metropolitan areas by pricing the tradeoffs between housing and transportation costs that buyers and renters make when choosing where to live. Compact\, walkable\, mixed-use communities with convenient access to public transit and employment centers sometimes appear expensive because of higher housing costs — but the H+T Index shows that these places can often make for more affordable living than lower-density exurban communities because households can own fewer cars and still maintain a high quality of life. In addition to providing household cost data at the Census block group level\, the H+T Index also provides household vehicle miles traveled estimates\, access to transit\, proximity to jobs\, and household greenhouse gas emissions from driving. Learn how the Index works with a detailed explanation and a live demo\, hear how some communities are using the Index for planning purposes\, and learn about upcoming updates to the H+T Index database that will expand the ways it can be used. SUMMARY:Webinar: Real Estate Finance from Simple to Complex (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will parse the fundamental components of real estate finance so that participants will better understand the financial pro formas that real estate developers present to planners and economic developers when seeking public approvals for projects. Three finance exercises involving realistic real estate developments will then be conducted. The first will demonstrate a simple project involving equity and debt but that does not involve public participation. The second will be a project that requires a public-private partnership and the consequent effects on the finances of both parties. The third will get a little more complicated as an urban redevelopment project involving not only a public-private partnership but also tax credits and tax increment financing\, demonstrating the impacts on the financial pro forma and the economic value of the investment to the developer and\, separately\, to the public entity. \nThis webcast is sponsored by the Economic Development Division. \nClick here to register: https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/560860403

SUMMARY:Webinar: Using GIS to Improve Planning Decisions\, part 1: Identifying Factors that Influence Rural Land Parcelization (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:GIS can be a valuable tool for providing information for planning decisions.  In this first of a two-part series\, we will look at the parcelization process in rural communities.  Parcelization\, or the division of land in smaller lots\, is highlighted as a critical step in the transformation of rural communities from places that rely on the landscapes perennial yield of raw natural resources to places that packages and sell the landscape itself for consumption and development. Understanding the relative influences of landscape factors on land division can assist decision makers in allocating land protection resources.
