SUMMARY:Webinar: Modernizing Transportation Agencies
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\n  \nTransportation needs always exceed funding. At the same time\, transportation projects are expected to do more than ever — move cars\, trucks\, transit\, bikes and pedestrians safely and efficiently. Transportation for America works with transportation agencies to find ways to make money go farther and to identify ways to make better move all users of the system safely. This technical assistance includes training on coordinating transportation and land use\, practical design and the needs of all users. Then Transportation for America analyzed the transportation agency’s project development process to identify where rules\, procedures and culture might interfere with the delivery of cost-effective\, multimodal projects.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Measuring Sustainability Outcomes: Easier Said than Done?
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\n  \nAs communities look to measure sustainability in a world of proliferating indicators and rating systems\, planners find that some metrics are easier to measure – and manage – than others. Dive deeper into the topic of sustainability metrics with speakers from Audubon International\, STAR Communities\, New York State\, and SUNY Binghamton\, who will share real world examples and recommendations for measuring sustainability. Taking a few categories of sustainability indicators to focus the discussion\, the panel will provide an in-depth look at how to collect and use these measures\, and will highlight metrics and measures needing further inquiry and improvement.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Forging Neighborhoods for all Generations
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\nA powerful new reality and a profound demographic transformation is an aging America. That baby boomers are swelling the ranks of older Americans is well-documented. This profound demographic transition is challenging communities struggling to maintain the status quo\, and\, is overwhelming to government and community policymakers at all levels. Preparing for this wave is viewed as a political and economic liability – impacting social security\, healthcare costs and services..and placing an added burden on the young. As the vast majority of older adults want to age in place\, they are creating a demand for communities that are age friendly. Age-friendly communities are friendly to all ages\, not just older adults. Ultimately\, young and old want the same things: an environment that allows them to participate and thrive. Financing age-friendly initiatives do not have to be costly. Planners and local governments should give attention to multigenerational planning and the work underway in cities developing more age-friendly communities – from New York to Honolulu – who are taking creative steps to build their adaptive capacity\, optimize opportunities and cultivate synergies for community change.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Utilizing public-private partnerships for local and region innovation
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\nWe live in aworld with much uncertainty about federal level transportation legislation andsufficient funding to maintain existing infrastructure in our communities. With this level of uncertainty about policy and funding\, it can be difficult at the local level to think about projects like bike share\, which can take years to plan and large capital investments to fund. However\, data and research indicatethat millennials and boomers want livable communities where they can live\,work\, and play without having to get into a car. Mobility preferences andtrends are expanding beyond a single occupancy vehicle and cities and townsthat explore and provide safe multimodal transportation options are thriving. Albuquerque’sdowntown pilot bike share\, BICI (ashortened version of bicicleta\, the Spanish word for bicycle and pronounced“bee-see”) launched on May 15\, 2015\, with 15 stations and 75 bicycles amere seven months after local planners started working on the project. Througha creative partnership between the DowntownABQ MainStreet Initiative and the Mid-Region Council of Governments\, and through public-private funding\, Albuquerque was able to realize the first phase of BICI for residents andvisitors. Participants will learn how Albuquerque made BICI a reality without initialmajor capital investments and how the program will continue and grow.

SUMMARY:(Webinar) The New “Cottage” Industry: Housing\, Lodging\, and the Sharing Economy
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\nThe new Sharing Economy has enabled the availability of private short-term rental properties like never before. Web-based clearinghouses for short-term rentals\, such as VRBO and AirBnB\, have changed the economic and regulatory landscape of short-term rental markets. These changes are felt in municipalities of all sizes. While some communities experience strains on the availability of long-term rental housing\, others value the short-terms rentals as a supplement to traditional lodging options. This session will explore the relationship of the short-term rental sector of the sharing economy to land use and tax regulation and social and economic factors in resort and destination communities. Sponsored by the Small Town and Rural Planning Division.

SUMMARY:New (Webinar) Data Tools for Supporting Analysis of Equitable Development and Environmental Justice
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\nUnderstanding the challenges andopportunities communities face—economic\, social\, and environmental—is a prerequisite for making investments that achieve their goals. To respond to this need\, environmental justice stakeholders have begun developing analytical tools that can give communities rich and accessible information for supporting local goals for environmental protection and equitable development in cities and regions. This webinar will cover two of these tools – EPA’s EJSCREEN\, an environmental justice screening and mapping tool\, and the National Equity Atlas a comprehensive data resource to track\, measure\, and make the case for inclusive growth developed by PolicyLink and the Program for Environmental and Regional Equity. The presentations will explain what these tools are\, how they have been used in real world scenarios to advance equity in local and regional development practices\, followed by questions and answers.

SUMMARY:(Webinar) The Central Social District - the Key to Tomorrow's Successful Downtowns
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\nFor decades\, the terms Central Business District\, CBD and downtown were used almost interchangeably because\, functionally\, downtowns were dominated by retail stores\, office based businesses\, professionals and government agencies\, along with some hotels and maybe entertainment venues. Today\, in downtowns large and small\, the CBD functions are being rivaled or even surpassed by their Central Social District (CSD) functions. That includes housing\, restaurants and watering holes\, and vibrant entertainment niches that include not only venues for formal entertainments such cinemas\, theaters\, museums and concert halls\, but also lively parks\, plazas\, and other gathering areas. Your downtown’s competitive advantage is therefore changing in important ways. Looking beyond the draw of speciality retail and entertainment\, innovative downtown leaders and community planners are seizing on the opportunity to re-brand and fully embrace the downtown as the “heart of the community” where people come to gather\, celebrate\, meet friends\, and make new ones.  Art venues\, libraries\, and a myriad of informal entertainment venues are seen as increasingly important components of downtown revitalization because they improve quality of life and create more vibrant experiences for downtown visitors. But how do they fit into the overall fabric of a downtown\, both economically and physically? What other downtown assets can be leveraged and tied into these types of interventions? This webinar will explain how the concept of the central social distric (CSD)t can be used as a planning tool to integrate new approaches into downtown in a smart\, strategic way. Presenters will discuss downtown business niches  and how they can be grown using the CSD concept. Case studies from two communities will illustrate how the CSD concept supports (and in fact drives) downtown economic development. Participants will also learn about innovative ways to help fund this next wave of downtown investment.

SUMMARY:Webinar: APA’s New Aging-in-Community Programs
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\nWhile aging in place enables older adults to live at home independently\, Aging in Community promotes social capital—a sense of social connectedness and interdependence – with systems of support and caring to maximize one’s ability to remain at home in their community. Aging demographics challenge the shape of our policies\, planning and physical environments. A 2010 Metlife survey of 1400 local governments revealed that limited progress has been made in undertaking a comprehensive assessment to create a livable community for all ages. Planners play a key role in the provision of structures and services that support or hinder resident well-being\, productivity\, and prosperity. APA has developed a toolkit to help planners and public officials to address the unprecedented challenges of aging communities: a web portal of resources on ‘Aging and Livable Communities’; A policy guide on Aging in Community; a multigenerational planning framework for decision-making; and a new Planning Advisory Service report\, Planning Age-Supportive Communities\, with practical guidance to help communities develop aging-supportive programs. Leading players share the back stories behind the documents.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Big Data and Small Communities: Opportunities and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nNowadays a wide variety of data from the US Census Bureau is easily accessible for anybody to use and it is relatively easy to create impressive looking maps and flowcharts. But how reliable is this data and can we really use it to inform planning decisions? This program will highlight some of the issues with the data especially with regard to liability\, comparability and data aggregation. In addition\, the program will briefly discuss why these issues are even more relevant when you use third party software.

SUMMARY:Webinar: How Effective Parking Management Helps Create More Livable Communities (CM | 1)
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nParking is a critical piece of a community’s infrastructure. It plays an important role in developing “mixed-use projects” and sustainable transportation. Parking also has a direct impact on the ability to create compact\, healthy communities. \nOverly restrictive parking requirements can thwart efforts to build walkable communities that require less parking. Too little parking can impact retailers and the financing of residential development. Ultimately\, decisions made about parking affect the livability of our communities. \nThis webinar will focus on the new “Effective Parking Management” action that seeks to help New Jersey municipalities “right-size” their parking. It highlights the importance of properly evaluating parking demand and then discusses strategies that municipalities may employ to address their specific parking needs. \nLearn about: \n\nStrategies that work to make existing parking more efficient\nStrategies that reduce future parking demand\nStrategies that enhance (or do not hinder) walkability\nThen hear from communities that have successfully utilized these strategies.\n\nSPEAKERS:\nTeri Jover\, Managing Director\, New Jersey Future \nJim Constantine\, Principal\, Looney Ricks Kiss \nCase Study: Metuchen

SUMMARY:Webinar: Reed v. Town of Gilbert: The Supreme Court's New Rules for Temporary -- and other -- Signs
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nThis webcast will discuss what local governments need to do to ensure that their sign codes comply with the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 2015 decision in Reed v. Town of Gilbert. That decision established that any sign regulation that “on its face” requires a consideration of a sign’s content to determine how that sign will be regulated is “content-based” and subject to “strict scrutiny.” Many\, if not most\, sign codes contain such distinctions in the regulation of temporary signs; for example\, by treating “real estate” signs differently than “political” signs. After Reed\, such distinctions will be upheld only if local government can prove they serve a “compelling governmental interest” and are “narrowly-tailored” to achieve that interest. This session will provide guidance on: (1) when and how to replace content-based sign regulations with effective content-neutral sign regulations and (2) which content-based regulations should be retained and how to defend them if challenged. This session will also examine the recently completed study\, Best Practices When Regulating Temporary Signs\, by Wendy Moeller AICP.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Regulating Electronic Message Centers
DESCRIPTION:On-premise digital signs have demonstrated a proven ability to increase results for those that utilize them for commercial and community-oriented purposes. However\, many communities are relatively unfamiliar with this rapidly evolving technology\, and have concerns that these kinds of signs will create aesthetic\, safety and enforcement problems for their communities. Nearly all stakeholders struggling with digital signs and their regulation often have the same questions\, such as: \n\nWhat really are these digital signs and how do they work?\nHow is electronic technology evolving?\nIs there any way for the community-at-large to actually benefit from them?\nHow can we strike a balance between allowing businesses to use digital signs without creating aesthetic concerns?\nHow do we allow them without looking like Las Vegas\, or negatively impacting community safety?\nHow do we regulate them in ways that are understandable and enforceable\, without having to hire additional staff?\n\nHosted by James Carpentier\, AICP\, and presented by Wendy Moeller\, and Mike Freeborg\, Director of Government Relations for YESCO\, the presentation of answers these questions\, and provides practical\, solution-focused guidance that can set the foundation for regulations that allow for the opportunity to leverage this technology while protecting community aesthetic values and safety concerns. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Participant Experience Design: New Communication Strategies to Make Public Engagement More Effective
DESCRIPTION:Click Here to Register\nPlanners currently use diverse engagement tools and processes to reach “beyond the usual suspects” and get outside of City Hall to gather input. However\, reports\, findings\, draft and published plans all are still communicated in very traditional forms – long\, jargon-filled documents with limited ways to explore the content non-linearly or comment on it. For example\, even beautiful and well-designed PDF plan documents can miss communicating the true findings\, because they are stuck in one dimension with long\, dense blocks of text. Interactive media\, instant publishing\, and social media have changed the way people consume and process information\, which has raised expectations for how planners should communicate. Think about the New York Times’ long-form journalism: short videos\, interactive maps and charts\, and other interactive media. What if we communicated plans like that? During this webinar\, we will: 1. Begin by exploring inspiring possibilities for communicating complex topics\, scenarios\, and plan documents in simple\, intuitive ways; this overview draws from strong engagement principles and summarizes “what you need to know” when planning and budgeting; 2. Specifically discover how interaction design\, gamification\, and publishing for different devices can reach more (and more diverse) audiences compared to traditional media; 3. Share examples of data visualization techniques to more effectively showcase findings and results; and 4. Open the “floor” for participants to share their experiences\, challenges\, and ideas. Each focus area will be presented around promising examples of recent planning projects from around North America and feature key takeaways that planners can start using today.

SUMMARY:Health Impact Assessments (CM Pending | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is an emerging area of practice in the United States that is designed to be a practical tool that can be used to incorporate “health in all policies” into decisions made outside the traditional health fields that have impacts on health (transportation\, land use\, development\, infrastructure\, housing\, education\, policy).  HIA promotes a structured six step approach that still allows sufficient flexibility to be molded to various types of projects\, programs and policies at a local\, regional\, state or federal level.  By bringing together scientific data\, health expertise and public input\, HIA is a systematic approach to identify and assess the potential positive and negative health effects of decisions related to policies\, programs or projects. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Age-Friendly Communities (CM Pending | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:America is confronting a silver tsunami. For the next 20 years\, 10\,000 baby boomers turn 65 daily\, joining an already growing number over 80+. This profound demographic transition is challenging communities struggling with a tough economy\, and\, is overwhelming to government and community policymakers at all levels. Planners and local governments should give attention to: holistic approach of multigenerational planning\, work underway in cities\, such as New York and Atlanta\, taking creative steps to make their neighborhoods age-friendly and tools such as the Villages movement for self-empowerment on aging-in-place. This session will examine some tools and resources to foster communities friendly to all ages and highlight on-the-ground strategies to ‘fund’ changes. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Cultural districts and cultural institutions: suns or black holes?
DESCRIPTION:Register \nOne of the first things that many people think about in creative placemaking is creating a cultural district or building a large cultural institution.  While districts and institutions can become catalysts for community-wide creativity and revitalization\, they can also absorb a lot of time\, energy and resources that could be used effectively elsewhere in the community.  Learn how creative placemaking can make it more likely that districts and institutions have a broader impact on their communities.
