Virtual tools can exclude or discourage stakeholders who do not have the resources or knowledge to participate. But they can also provide access for individuals who often have been excluded or chose not to participate. This presentation will highlight resources to help communities go from opportunistic to strategic green infrastructure planning: Considering Climate Change in Coastal Conservation Planning – an online resource that provides six succinct steps\, key resources for each\, and links to the full guidance developed; Green Infrastructure Mapping Guide – an online tutorial to help spatial analysts use GIS to prioritize green infrastructure to help reduce storm surge and sea level rise impacts; A Guide to Assessing Green Infrastructure Costs and Benefits for Flood Reduction – a six-step watershed based approach to documenting the costs of flooding due to precipitation\, projecting increased flooding and associated costs under future land use and climate conditions\, and calculating the benefits and costs of reducing flooding with green infrastructure over the long term; Green Infrastructure Protective Services Animation – helps community members and local decision-makers better understand the storm protection benefits from green infrastructure.

Preparing for this wave is viewed as a political and economic liability – impacting social security\, healthcare costs and services..and placing an added burden on the young. As the vast majority of older adults want to age in place\, they are creating a demand for communities that are age friendly. Age-friendly communities are friendly to all ages\, not just older adults. Ultimately\, young and old want the same things: an environment that allows them to participate and thrive. Financing age-friendly initiatives do not have to be costly. Planners and local governments should give attention to multigenerational planning and the work underway in cities developing more age-friendly communities – from New York to Honolulu – who are taking creative steps to build their adaptive capacity\, optimize opportunities and cultivate synergies for community change.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Utilizing public-private partnerships for local and region innovation
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\nWe live in aworld with much uncertainty about federal level transportation legislation andsufficient funding to maintain existing infrastructure in our communities. With this level of uncertainty about policy and funding\, it can be difficult at the local level to think about projects like bike share\, which can take years to plan and large capital investments to fund. However\, data and research indicatethat millennials and boomers want livable communities where they can live\,work\, and play without having to get into a car. Mobility preferences andtrends are expanding beyond a single occupancy vehicle and cities and townsthat explore and provide safe multimodal transportation options are thriving. Albuquerque’sdowntown pilot bike share\, BICI (ashortened version of bicicleta\, the Spanish word for bicycle and pronounced“bee-see”) launched on May 15\, 2015\, with 15 stations and 75 bicycles amere seven months after local planners started working on the project. Througha creative partnership between the DowntownABQ MainStreet Initiative and the Mid-Region Council of Governments\, and through public-private funding\, Albuquerque was able to realize the first phase of BICI for residents andvisitors. Participants will learn how Albuquerque made BICI a reality without initialmajor capital investments and how the program will continue and grow.

Looking beyond the draw of speciality retail and entertainment\, innovative downtown leaders and community planners are seizing on the opportunity to re-brand and fully embrace the downtown as the “heart of the community” where people come to gather\, celebrate\, meet friends\, and make new ones.  Art venues\, libraries\, and a myriad of informal entertainment venues are seen as increasingly important components of downtown revitalization because they improve quality of life and create more vibrant experiences for downtown visitors. But how do they fit into the overall fabric of a downtown\, both economically and physically? What other downtown assets can be leveraged and tied into these types of interventions? This webinar will explain how the concept of the central social distric (CSD)t can be used as a planning tool to integrate new approaches into downtown in a smart\, strategic way. Presenters will discuss downtown business niches  and how they can be grown using the CSD concept. Case studies from two communities will illustrate how the CSD concept supports (and in fact drives) downtown economic development. APA has developed a toolkit to help planners and public officials to address the unprecedented challenges of aging communities: a web portal of resources on ‘Aging and Livable Communities’; A policy guide on Aging in Community; a multigenerational planning framework for decision-making; and a new Planning Advisory Service report\, Planning Age-Supportive Communities\, with practical guidance to help communities develop aging-supportive programs. SUMMARY:Webinar: Reed v. Town of Gilbert: The Supreme Court's New Rules for Temporary -- and other -- Signs
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nThis webcast will discuss what local governments need to do to ensure that their sign codes comply with the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 2015 decision in Reed v. Town of Gilbert. That decision established that any sign regulation that “on its face” requires a consideration of a sign’s content to determine how that sign will be regulated is “content-based” and subject to “strict scrutiny.” Many\, if not most\, sign codes contain such distinctions in the regulation of temporary signs; for example\, by treating “real estate” signs differently than “political” signs. After Reed\, such distinctions will be upheld only if local government can prove they serve a “compelling governmental interest” and are “narrowly-tailored” to achieve that interest. This session will provide guidance on: (1) when and how to replace content-based sign regulations with effective content-neutral sign regulations and (2) which content-based regulations should be retained and how to defend them if challenged. This session will also examine the recently completed study\, Best Practices When Regulating Temporary Signs\, by Wendy Moeller AICP.

DESCRIPTION:Click Here to Register\nPlanners currently use diverse engagement tools and processes to reach “beyond the usual suspects” and get outside of City Hall to gather input. However\, reports\, findings\, draft and published plans all are still communicated in very traditional forms – long\, jargon-filled documents with limited ways to explore the content non-linearly or comment on it. For example\, even beautiful and well-designed PDF plan documents can miss communicating the true findings\, because they are stuck in one dimension with long\, dense blocks of text. Interactive media\, instant publishing\, and social media have changed the way people consume and process information\, which has raised expectations for how planners should communicate. Think about the New York Times’ long-form journalism: short videos\, interactive maps and charts\, and other interactive media. What if we communicated plans like that? During this webinar\, we will: 1. Begin by exploring inspiring possibilities for communicating complex topics\, scenarios\, and plan documents in simple\, intuitive ways; this overview draws from strong engagement principles and summarizes “what you need to know” when planning and budgeting; 2. Specifically discover how interaction design\, gamification\, and publishing for different devices can reach more (and more diverse) audiences compared to traditional media; 3. Share examples of data visualization techniques to more effectively showcase findings and results; and 4. Open the “floor” for participants to share their experiences\, challenges\, and ideas. Each focus area will be presented around promising examples of recent planning projects from around North America and feature key takeaways that planners can start using today.
