SUMMARY:Webinar: Planning for an Aging Population (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:With the Baby Boomer Generation retiring and a large segment of the population entering old age\, planners have a new set of demands for planning communities and developments that address these changing demographics.     This session features two prominent urban planners who have extensive practical and research experience in planning for and housing the elderly population.   Mr. Gourguechon will address what it means to grow old\, the issues of stereotyping and ageism\, finding purpose and meaning in life as we age\, and the special needs of the elderly for housing\, living arrangements\, public safety\, education\, and mobility.  Pertinent demographic\, economic\, and health care statistics and studies will be discussed and initiatives that planners can pursue to alleviate the concerns of functional limitations and quality of life will be identified.   Professor Heumann will focus on the role of urban planning in providing sufficient care for senior adults and implications for service demographics\, standards of living\, and care providers.   He will discuss a range of specialized neighborhood and housing models that have been developed to accommodate the senior population\, including Community Development Corporations\, different forms of Home Help\, and the Neighborhood Warden model which can help to monitor and care for seniors in the community.   Both speakers will address the important role that planners have to play in this significant societal change. \nThis webcast is sponsored by the Women in Planning Division of APA. \nRegister Online:  https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/861456690

SUMMARY:Webinar: Impacts and Opportunities of an Aging Population (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:The “Impacts and Opportunities of an Aging Population” webinar will explore the new world that is being created by the seismic demographic shift that begins on January 1\, 2011 when the first of the Baby Boomer generation celebrates their 65th birthday. Over the next 20 years (2030) the older adult population will double to 71 million and\, by 2050\, the population of our seniors will be equal to that of our youth (109\,090\,000 vs 109\,147\,000).  The sheer number of people growing older will create more demand for walkable neighborhoods and mixed used developments that place businesses and services used by an older population in close proximity to residential neighborhoods.  Communities that have also incorporated universal design standards into their overall planning and building codes will also be in a better position to enable their residents to “age in place” in naturally occurring retirement communities – thereby reducing the demand for high-cost institutional care.  The impact and opportunities of an aging population goes beyond traditional city planning and extends into public policy and strategic planning.  An increasingly frail population can impact the usage of traditional government services such as 9-1-1 emergency services\, can increase local prison costs and can increase the Medicaid match that local governments are responsible.  Although there are significant challenges that communities face with an increasingly older population base\, there are tremendous opportunities a retirement population brings including a strong core of volunteers\, a population that discretionary income and a population with a desire to contribute. \nThis webcast is sponsored by the Florida Chapter. \nRegister Online:  https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/610107874

SUMMARY:Webinar: Helping to Create and Sustain an Ethical Office Environment (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:While individual planners strive to attain the high ethical standards of the AICP Code of Ethics\, the office environment is certainly a contributing factor to ethical practice. Learn from Carol Barrett\, FAICP as she shares helpful advise on how to work to create and sustain an ethical office environment. She will explore common ethical challenges in the office and approaches to resolve these ethical conflicts. \nRegister Online:  https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/421498050

SUMMARY:Webinar: Healthy\, Active and Vibrant Communities (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:In the last two decades\, communities across the nation have come to value bicycle and pedestrian facilities – sidewalks\, bike lanes\, shared use paths – as significant community assets. Bicycle and pedestrian facilities provide direct benefits to residents and employees\, connecting people to local destinations and increasing access to recreational opportunities. These facilities also provide indirect benefits\, such as strengthening sense of community\, increasing social interaction\, improving public health\, improving safety\, reducing congestion and pollution\, and promoting social equity. Creating a bikeable and walkable environment doesn’t happen overnight. It takes vision\, timing\, collaboration\, determination\, and community support. \nThis webcast is sponsored by the Missouri Chapter. \nRegister Online:  https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/514339851

SUMMARY:Webinar: Planning with Social Media (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:The Internet has allowed a new ease in citizen communication and engagement.  This citizen input has materialized through the Internet and more specifically through e-mail\, blogs\, interactive websites\, U Tube\, My Space\, Facebook\, and now Twitter.  Most people’s cell phones are now powerful tools for communicating with each other.  However\, the amount of information which goes out via these tools on a daily basis is somewhat overwhelming and seems hard to get a handle on.  Everyday people are discussing political and planning issues electronically and are making decisions about their future not based on the actions of a city council or county commission but on what they talk with each other about.  This information flow is moving faster than most governments operate.  So\, how can planners use these powerful tools to help communities plan their futures and keep some kind of control of the data provided as a result of using these tools?  In other words\, how can we stay ahead of this new citizen power and use it to promote and plan sustainable communities. \nSpecifically will you help us answer  two questions for the benefit of all planners undertaking public engagement in this new era of information overload. \nQuestion #1:  How can you and your community or firm use Internet tools to  reach out to citizens in regards to general planning or a specific planning project. \nQuestion #2:  What are the positives and negatives of using this type of community  interaction? \nThis webcast is sponsored by the Arkansas Chapter. \nRegister:  https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/219971242

SUMMARY:Webinar - Bridging the gap between Community Based Organizations and the Planning Community (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:In many places Community Based Organizations (CBO) are on the ground running on their own without support and/or coordination with local government. CBO’s are often so focused on the funding necessary to support those vulnerable populations they serve that their interaction with planning at the comprehensive level in consultation with local governments is many times set-aside. While many CBO’s lack the capacity to do community planning\, local government lacks capacity to implement and support the efforts necessary to revitalize the area that CBO’s are most interested in serving. Learn from experts on the ground in New Jersey with extensive experience and ideas as to how to utilize each others resources to support the revitalization of areas with socio-economic issues that require the CBO’s hands-on activities with local governments ability to shape the policies necessary to ensure a complete and equit! able effort is eventually realized. \nRegister Here:  https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/520224779

SUMMARY:Blending Conservation Design and the New Urbanism (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:This program  describes the crossover between Conservation Design and the New Urbanism\, showing how they can be blended. In areas served by public water and sewer\, conservation design techniques can be readily combined with TND principles to create walkable\, mixed-use neighborhoods\, often involving infill projects and incremental growth around the community’s outer edges. This program shows how higher density neighborhoods can be designed around the central organizing principle of an open space network and incorporate distinctive features of the natural and cultural landscape\, producing more sustainable results. This program is based largely on my last two books: Envisioning Better Communities and Crossroads\, Hamlet\, Village\, Town. This webcast is sponsored by the Connecticut Chapter. \nRegister Online:  https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/689181570
