SUMMARY:Federal Tools for Aging and Livable Communities (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Transforming our communities so that they prosper\, thrive and grow to their full potential by making it possible for all people to achieve and maintain well-being has become particularly challenging with the economic crisis confronting our nation. Financial distress\, budget cuts\, and limited resources are undermining and eliminating programs and services\, as well as reshaping the policies that impact the most vulnerable in our society. Amid this chaotic environment\, there are initiatives that are demonstrating leadership in addressing the needs and improving the lives of older Americans. This session will explore promising efforts to mobilize and innovate Federal solutions to aging issues cross-agency and intra-agency such as: creating a single agency entry point\, providing a forum for dialogue or serving as a repository for policy and programs related to aging. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Aging-Friendly Agenda (CM Pending | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:The graying of America and the global economic crisis are powerful forces that have converged this year\, critically impacting the ability of communities to address the emerging hardship needs of older Americans. A 2010 nationwide survey of communities by the National Association of Area Agencies – the first survey conducted in 2005 – reveals only limited progress in advancing the goal to create a “livable community” for all ages – many are struggling just to maintain status quo. One of the few exceptions is Philadelphia which has the highest proportion of older persons (age 60+) of any ten largest cities in the nation. Philadelphia Corporation for Aging(PCA) has developed an agenda based on EPA’s Aging Initiative model which integrates active aging and smart growth. Age-Friendly Philadelphia is a research\, planning\, and policy agenda to improve the overall quality of life for the City’s seniors. An award-winning program\, the premise is that all ages will benefit from improvements to the physical and social environment that promote an age-friendly city. PCA is the catalyst for generating non-traditional partnerships around the common purpose of four principles for active aging: healthy eating\, social capital\, mobility\, and flexible and accessible housing. This innovative approach to an age-friendly city with building strong alliances as a centerpiece is an inspiring model for other communities. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Economic Impacts and Opportunities of Families: Children\, Elders\, and Caregivers (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Demographic transformation creates challenges and opportunities for all US communities. Retiring baby boomers are making new demands – in terms of the built environment\, services and housing alternatives. Children and youth require investment to ensure healthy growth and development and productive economic futures. Caregivers\, especially the sandwich generation caught in the middle\, need more support to avoid burnout. Fiscal stress underscores the importance of finding new ways to meet these changing needs. Fortunately\, responding to these needs can contribute to the creation of dynamic communities that provide supportive and healthy environments for all stages of the lifecycle. \nThis webinar will offer a fresh perspective on: \n\nEconomics of Families – Prevailing wisdom suggests families with young children are a cost to communities whereas retiring baby boomers are “grey gold.” The reality is both groups represent important costs and benefits. Understanding these economic realities will help communities plan for all ages. \nService Integration – Traditionally we have provided services in age segregated silos. The opportunity to integrate service delivery can improve service effectiveness and efficiency. \nPhysical Design – To promote more independence among children and elders we need to design environments which provide housing and transportation alternatives and enable independence thereby reducing the need for services and promoting healthy lifestyles and development.\n\nThis webinar will provide the latest research and provide examples of how communities are addressing these challenges. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Community Development in a Global Context: Gender-Aware Planning in African Cities (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Charisma Acey will share her findings and experiences with women’s responses to the lack of service delivery and networked infrastructure within the context of their roles and responsibilities in the household\, sense of community\, and opportunities to participate in urban governance in Nigeria and Uganda. Evidence shows that direct engagement between affected communities (possibly through\, or assisted by\, civil society actors)\, and government\, can lead to citizen participation in establishing public priorities\, and in budgetary decisions that affect their access to fundamental services such as water\, sanitation\, transportation\, energy and healthcare. However\, there is a need for gender-aware’ urban planning that recognizes women’s economic and social roles in urban settings\, and the ways in which women become excluded from economic opportunities and decision making. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Webinar: Community Development in a Global Context: Gender-Aware Planning in African Cities (CM I 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Charisma Acey will share her findings and experiences with women’s responses to the lack of service delivery and networked infrastructure within the context of their roles and responsibilities in the household\, sense of community\, and opportunities to participate in urban governance in Nigeria and Uganda. \nThis webcast is sponsored by The Ohio State University. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Webinar: Mobile Technology\, Distracted Attention and Pedestrian Safety (CM I 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:The webinar will discuss the research on the dangers to pedestrians of talking while talking or texting on cell phones. It will cover four of Prof. Nasar’s studies on pedestrians and cell phones and the evolution of his thinking about both beneficial and harmful effects of cell phones use among pedestrians. The studies include:1) a study of cell phone use\, fear of crime\, and safety from crime among college students\,2) a study to see if the distracted attention found among drivers using cell phones applied to pedestrians talking on cell phones\,3) a study of the safety of pedestrian behavior at crosswalks as it relates to use of mobile technology\, and4) an examination of emergency room admissions for accidents related to cell phone use among pedestrians. Prof. Nasar concludes with discussion of some planning and policy recommendations that arise from the research findings. \nThis webcast is sponsored by The Ohio State University. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Webinar: Using GIS to Improve Planning Decisions\, part 2 (CM I 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:In this second presentation on using GIS analysis for making planning decisions\, we will examine the landscape effects of residential development scenarios. Planners and resource managers have long sought to better control land development via the regulatory framework. Recent developments in GIS have made the development of policy scenarios relatively easy to document and analyze. Future residential development was simulated using GIS based on conventional and density-based zoning regulations for a set of Wisconsin communities. We then measure landscape fragmentation at complete build-out and compare policies between communities. Of particular interest is the potential for this type of analysis to help assess and illustrate the degree to which a town or county is moving towards the goals expressed in their comprehensive plans. \nThis webcast is sponsored by the Wisconsin Chapter. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Webinar: What Economic Development Planners Should Know about Eco-Industrial Development (CM I 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Reconciling economic development and environmental protection is one of the most difficult challenges facing planners in the 21st Century. Living on a planet with diminishing resources we need to understand how use what we have more efficiently and incorporate the concepts of reuse\, cascading of material flows\, and greening our businesses into our community planning processes. Learn the basics about Eco-industrial Development from one of the leading practitioners in the field and gain an understanding of how Eco-industrial Development can fit into your sustainability planning efforts. Is there added value in offering technical assistance and educational opportunities to community businesses to assist in greening their operations? What are the roles of economic developers and planners in facilitating by-product exchanges so that one firm’s waste stream is another’s source of raw materials? Join Peter Lowitt\, FAICP\, Director of the Devens Enterprise Commission and chair of the Industrial Symbiosis Eco-Industrial Development Council of the International Society of Industrial Ecology and developer of two eco-industrial initiatives in this webinar sponsored by the APA Economic Development Division. This course has been submitted for 1.5 CM credits. \nClick Here to Register
