SUMMARY:Gubernatorial Candidates Forum: Walk\, Bike\, Ride NJ
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Tri-State Transportation Campaign\, New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition\, East Coast Greenway Alliance\, Trust for Public Land\, and Circuit Trails Coalition\, New Jersey Future welcomes you to join this conversation with the candidates about their vision and plans for safe active transportation infrastructure and reliable public transit access for people of all ages and abilities in New Jersey. \nTransportation features\, such as bike lanes\, sidewalks\, and trails\, make communities safer\, healthier\, and more affordable to get around\, especially for vulnerable road users like older adults and people with disabilities. They provide the ability for commuters to seamlessly walk to the bus stop or train station to get to work\, children to safely ride their bikes to school\, and people of all ages and abilities to confidently enjoy a stroll to the park or store. \nAs communities seek better walkability\, bicycle infrastructure\, and reliable transit options in an era of uncertain state and federal funding\, the stakes for New Jersey’s transportation network could not be higher. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear where the candidates running for Governor stand on critical mobility issues related to accessibility\, connectivity\, and safety in the Garden State. How will the next governor make it easier and safer for residents of all ages and abilities to get around the state? \n\nSteve Sweeney\nSean Spiller\nSheena Collum (Steve Fulop’s running mate)\n\nModerator: Meishka Mitchell\, President & CEO\, Emerald Cities Collaborative \nAll Gubernatorial candidates were invited to participate in this forum. \nBy signing up\, you agree to receive email updates from New Jersey Future and our co-sponsors with ways you can advocate for and protect our environment. You can unsubscribe at any time. \nRegister

SUMMARY:(Webinar) Equitable Inclusion in Virtual Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \nHow can community leaders continue to engage stakeholders and other members of the public in important local decisions when staying safe means staying home? The MSU National Charrette Institute and the Form-Based Codes Institute at Smart Growth America are partnering to deliver a series of webinars to provide local leaders\, developers and advocates with tools and examples for staying in touch\, sharing ideas\, and getting interactive feedback to keep critical decisions moving forward. Many of these techniques\, while essential in this time of separation\, have the potential to engage new\, hard-to-reach segments of the community\, and will be useful\, even beyond this current crisis. \nOne of the greatest challenges in any community engagement effort is ensuring that all stakeholder groups have a voice. Virtual tools can exclude or discourage stakeholders who do not have the resources or knowledge to participate. But they can also provide access for individuals who often have been excluded or chose not to participate. In this FREE June 16 webinar\, a panel of experts will explore how virtual platforms and tools can\, along with other methods\, bring the voices and perspectives of all groups affected into the decision-making process. \nMichigan State University is committed to providing equal opportunity for participation in all programs\, services and activities. Accommodations for persons with disabilities may be requested by contacting the event contact two weeks prior to the start of the event. Requests received after this date will be honored whenever possible.

Many of these techniques\, while essential in this time of separation\, have the potential to engage new\, hard-to-reach segments of the community\, and will be useful\, even beyond this current crisis. \nIn this FREE June 2 webinar\, hear from experts and practitioners about how a range of virtual engagement tools are being used to bring citizen stakeholders into critical public policy decision making when face-to-face engagement is not an option. Across the country\, local governments are keeping the wheels of government turning with virtual platforms for polling\, brainstorming and discussions\, collaborative design\, and public hearings. Some are finding these new methods more welcoming\, making it easier for stakeholders\, who previous were left out to participate. Join us for a discussion on what these platforms are how they are being used\, and the promise they hold for expanding engagement in the long-term\, even when face-to-face options are again possible. \nMichigan State University is committed to providing equal opportunity for participation in all programs\, services and activities. SUMMARY:(Webinar) Solutions for Walkability Challenges
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\n  \nAs Philadelphia continues its renaissance into a 24-hour city and its surrounding suburbs become more urbanized\, working with developers to add pedestrian amenities to new construction (while filling in the missing pieces of existing pedestrian infrastructure) is the new norm. How are planners and municipal staff succeeding in filling in these gaps? And how can good design make walking easier for all of us?

SUMMARY:(Webinar) Why Walking Matters
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\n  \nWalking is something that nearly everyone does daily. Not only is it our most reliable form of transportation\, it’s good for our collective health\, has little impact on the environment\, and is practically free. It makes sense that as a region we’d do all we could to make it as easy as possible to get people out and about—from our youngest (and most vulnerable) pedestrians to our seniors (who may not always feel as steady on their feet). You may know why walking matters\, but convincing others can be a challenge. Tune in for useful strategies and to see how some planners are doing their part to promote walkability (and healthy decision making).

SUMMARY:Webinar: Modernizing Transportation Agencies
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\n  \nTransportation needs always exceed funding. At the same time\, transportation projects are expected to do more than ever — move cars\, trucks\, transit\, bikes and pedestrians safely and efficiently. Transportation for America works with transportation agencies to find ways to make money go farther and to identify ways to make better move all users of the system safely. This technical assistance includes training on coordinating transportation and land use\, practical design and the needs of all users. Then Transportation for America analyzed the transportation agency’s project development process to identify where rules\, procedures and culture might interfere with the delivery of cost-effective\, multimodal projects.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Measuring Sustainability Outcomes: Easier Said than Done?
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\n  \nAs communities look to measure sustainability in a world of proliferating indicators and rating systems\, planners find that some metrics are easier to measure – and manage – than others. Dive deeper into the topic of sustainability metrics with speakers from Audubon International\, STAR Communities\, New York State\, and SUNY Binghamton\, who will share real world examples and recommendations for measuring sustainability. Taking a few categories of sustainability indicators to focus the discussion\, the panel will provide an in-depth look at how to collect and use these measures\, and will highlight metrics and measures needing further inquiry and improvement.
