SUMMARY:Let’s Break it Down: Simplifying Complex Information Training
DESCRIPTION:How do you distill a mountain of data into exactly what your audience needs to know? Simplifying complex information is no easy feat\, but during this Upskilling series\, planners will learn and practice implementing tested strategies for parsing the most important messages and tailoring content to the recipient. \nJoin Rachel Shindman\, AICP\, and Andy Rutz in “Let’s Break it Down: Simplifying Complex Information\,” a two-part Upskilling series on February 17 and 20. By the end of the series\, planners will have the confidence to more effectively communicate high-level planning information to a wide range of audiences. Planners in all fields can benefit equally from this series\, and an entry-level background is assumed. \nThe second part of “Let’s Break it Down: Simplifying Complex Information” is a hands-on training that allows participants to practice communicating sample data sets to different types of audiences\, such as elected officials\, internal staff\, and external constituents. Planners will gain experience tailoring communications to the audiences they engage with most in their particular lines of work\, as well as insight into the strategies of their peers. \nSeries co-facilitator Rachel Shindman is a Vice President at Economic & Planning Systems in Denver\, Colorado. In her day-to-day work\, she uses data and analysis to inform planning efforts\, often in the fields of affordable housing\, neighborhood planning and stabilization strategies\, and transit and infrastructure financing. Co-facilitator Andy Rutz is the founder of Crescendo Planning + Design and teaches at the University of Colorado–Denver. He has a combined 20 years of experience in urban design\, architecture\, urban planning\, and community engagement in the public and private sectors. \nLearning Takeaways: \nConfidence in your ability to guide data-driven decision-making \nTransferable tools that simplify complex information for the audiences your role communicates to most often \nRegister

SUMMARY:Gubernatorial Candidates Forum: Walk\, Bike\, Ride NJ
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Tri-State Transportation Campaign\, New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition\, East Coast Greenway Alliance\, Trust for Public Land\, and Circuit Trails Coalition\, New Jersey Future welcomes you to join this conversation with the candidates about their vision and plans for safe active transportation infrastructure and reliable public transit access for people of all ages and abilities in New Jersey. \nTransportation features\, such as bike lanes\, sidewalks\, and trails\, make communities safer\, healthier\, and more affordable to get around\, especially for vulnerable road users like older adults and people with disabilities. They provide the ability for commuters to seamlessly walk to the bus stop or train station to get to work\, children to safely ride their bikes to school\, and people of all ages and abilities to confidently enjoy a stroll to the park or store. \nAs communities seek better walkability\, bicycle infrastructure\, and reliable transit options in an era of uncertain state and federal funding\, the stakes for New Jersey’s transportation network could not be higher. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear where the candidates running for Governor stand on critical mobility issues related to accessibility\, connectivity\, and safety in the Garden State. How will the next governor make it easier and safer for residents of all ages and abilities to get around the state? \n\nSteve Sweeney\nSean Spiller\nSheena Collum (Steve Fulop’s running mate)\n\nModerator: Meishka Mitchell\, President & CEO\, Emerald Cities Collaborative \nAll Gubernatorial candidates were invited to participate in this forum. \nBy signing up\, you agree to receive email updates from New Jersey Future and our co-sponsors with ways you can advocate for and protect our environment. SUMMARY:(Webinar) Equitable Inclusion in Virtual Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \nHow can community leaders continue to engage stakeholders and other members of the public in important local decisions when staying safe means staying home? The MSU National Charrette Institute and the Form-Based Codes Institute at Smart Growth America are partnering to deliver a series of webinars to provide local leaders\, developers and advocates with tools and examples for staying in touch\, sharing ideas\, and getting interactive feedback to keep critical decisions moving forward. Many of these techniques\, while essential in this time of separation\, have the potential to engage new\, hard-to-reach segments of the community\, and will be useful\, even beyond this current crisis. \nOne of the greatest challenges in any community engagement effort is ensuring that all stakeholder groups have a voice. Virtual tools can exclude or discourage stakeholders who do not have the resources or knowledge to participate. But they can also provide access for individuals who often have been excluded or chose not to participate. In this FREE June 16 webinar\, a panel of experts will explore how virtual platforms and tools can\, along with other methods\, bring the voices and perspectives of all groups affected into the decision-making process. \nMichigan State University is committed to providing equal opportunity for participation in all programs\, services and activities. Accommodations for persons with disabilities may be requested by contacting the event contact two weeks prior to the start of the event. Requests received after this date will be honored whenever possible.
