SUMMARY:Completing the Count – Planners and the U.S. Census!
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Census is a critical data tool that provides a resource designed to help community-based\, regional\, and statewide planning efforts. With the 2020 Census deadline on September 30th\, learn what tools you need now to ensure a complete count in your community. This session will explore how planners engaged their communities and what tools they used to increase response rates and participation in Census taking\, particularly during a pandemic. The session will also describe APA’s Census advocacy efforts at the federal level and opportunities for planners to increase advocacy for the Census and American Community Survey. The interactive panel will provide opportunities to learn from APA\, the U.S. Census NY Regional Office\, which covers most of Region 1\, and a local community’s efforts. In less than 35 days\, the 2020 census count will be closed.  Is everyone in your community counted?   Learn how to help increase the response rate\, get better data\, and enhance your community’s ability to have full representation and funding based on a full and accurate Census count. This will be a moderated panel with ample time for a participatory discussion with panelists. Join us on September 3 at 10 for the webinar. \nSpeakers: \n\nCarly Bari is a Partnership Specialist with the U.S. Census Bureau. In this role she works to promote the 2020 Census\, helps motivate people to achieve a complete count\, and educates on the importance of an accurate census.\nKelly Lynema is the Senior Planner for the Town of Arlington’s Department of Planning and Community Development\, where her work focuses on research\, data\, and community engagement\nKathleen “Kathy” McCabe\, FAICP specializes in economic development\, community planning\, market analysis\, and public financing.  As principal of McCabe Enterprises\, she works on strategic and land use planning\, downtown revitalization\, and redevelopment\nEmily Pasi is the Public Affairs Manager for the American Planning Association’s Washington\, DC office. SUMMARY:Phased Re-Planning and Legal Challenges in a COVID-19 World
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \n  \nWith phased reopening underway\, planning and zoning departments across the country are trying to accommodate new methods of operation in a COVID-19 world\, as well as how those changes will carry over once we are out of the pandemic. Many planners are now armed with new tools authorized by executive order. But are these planning tools enough? Are there legal barriers that could impede their success? This program will focus on legal and planning issues which are likely to arise as businesses reopen and the pandemic concludes. Topics to be discussed will include legal issues with executive orders\, virtual hearings (and whatever hybrid form they may soon take)\, relaxation of zoning regulations and local codes\, expedited permitting processes\, and actions that can be taken now to be better prepared for the next pandemic. The program will also address equity considerations related to these issues. Each panelist will offer a different perspective on this topic as a law professor\, mayor\, and land use attorneys representing private developers and municipalities. The discussion and best practices shared are intended to assist planners in other disaster situations.

SUMMARY:Webinar: COVID-19 Effects on Real Estate Demand
DESCRIPTION:Presented by APA New Jersey\nPlease Note: Due to capacity\, this webinar is limited to APA Region 1 Members only. APA Membership ID is required at registration. \nRegister Now \nAs the Metro New York economy begins to reactivate through phased reopening\, uncertainty remains as to the lasting effects on real estate demand. At the root of this question is whether initial reports of households relocating to the suburbs are just a short-term blip or part of a continuing trend. Additional questions include the potential for rebound in the homeownership rate (and corresponding decrease in rentership)\, financial feasibility and optimal program mixes for apartment projects already in the development pipeline\, and the long term viability of retail and office uses. \nThis is the event you cannot afford to miss! Get your laptop and come into Jeffrey Otteau’s living room to hear his forecast for the near- and long-term impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on real estate demand. Mr. Otteau is a 40-year valuation expert who has lectured across North America and is followed more than 10\,000 real estate professionals\, developers and bankers who rely on his forecasts to provide forward guidance on emerging real estate trends. He has been recognized as one of the most influential people in the real estate industry with television appearances on CNBC\, Bloomberg\, NBC News and Fox 5 News and frequently quoted in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. When Jeffrey Otteau talks\, it’s worth listening to what he has to say. Here’s a sampling of topics to be covered in this webinar:\nState of the Economy: What began with accelerating economic growth and rising consumer enthusiasm has quickly shifted to sheer panic as unemployment is already higher than during the Great Depression. Learn about the real-time effects on the economy to this point\, and what it tells us about the future. \nReal Estate Market Impacts: Although we are in uncharted waters\, it’s clear that the short-term impact on real estate markets has been crippling. This fast-paced roundup will examine what’s happening at the sector level for apartments\, commercial real estate and home sales as the economic shutdown choked off market demand and begins to recover. \nConsequences for Construction Spending: While the shutdown has already caused a slowdown for ongoing projects\, and new construction starts\, the long-term effects are even more concerning. Will activity bounce back quickly\, or will there be permanent consequences that carry forward to future years as developers and governments deal with financial constraints? Is an infrastructure spending bill on the horizon\, or will it remain stalled? Find out the forecast for spending in this essential economic sector. \nRecovery Timeline: How long will it take to find our way back? While declines in asset values and construction spending have already occurred\, the more difficult questions are for ‘How Long’ and by ‘How Much”. And while much uncertainty remains\, we’ll tell you about our projections for what happens next in the economy\, real estate markets and construction sector so you can adjust your planning models during this challenging time.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Coronavirus Economic Shocks: A New Planning World?
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \nThe “Great Contraction” has sent New Jersey into economic freefall. In just two months\, total employment in the state has fallen to the same level as 1985\, thirty-five years ago. In addition to deep short-term recession woes\, the shocks of the coronavirus are accelerating the pace of structural change and raising profound questions and uncertainties about the future. \nFor example\, the “office” is central to the economy of New Jersey. Will the magnitude of distress in office markets caused by the pandemic match the distress of bricks and mortar retailing caused by the rise of e-commerce? While the post-pandemic office has yet to be invented\, there will certainly be a rebalancing of office ecologies\, with significant planning implications. \nBuilding dense\, walkable\, transit-dependent\, mixed-use\, LWP (live\, work\, play) environments was a planning and development mantra of the past decade. Low-density\, automobile-centric suburbs were viewed as fading obsolete relics of the twentieth century\, while the “cool quotient” of urban areas soared. Can these pre-pandemic structures endure and adapt to post-pandemic health strictures? Will there be a pandemic-induced “resprawling” of New Jersey? \nThese are just some of the questions that the planning profession must confront. Join James W. Hughes and Joseph J. Seneca\, co-authors of the new Rutgers Regional Report monthly series labeled “Fast Track Research Notes.” Its first issue – Coronavirus Economic Shocks: New Jersey versus The Nation – was released on June 1. This webinar will be moderated by Charles Latini\, President of APA New Jersey. \nThis has been submitted for 1 AICP CM credit.
