DESCRIPTION:The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness along with the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management will be sponsoring several deliveries of a two-day training course titled\, Coastal Hazard and Vulnerability Assessment Tools (PER-378). The National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC) at the University of Hawaii\, a member of the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium (NDPC)\, will be instructing the DHS approved training course. There is no-cost to attend this course. \nDescription:\nThis performance-level training course provides training on the available tools for the assessment and planning for natural hazards and vulnerabilities that uniquely affect coastal communities. Examples of these hazards are short term events such as high surf\, storm surge\, and tsunami inundation\, or long term threats from sea level rise and coastal erosion. As a performance-level course\, this course aims to provide a detailed overview of the tools and technologies available to assess the hazards and the vulnerabilities of coastal communities. These tools include real-time data collection tools and technologies\, as well as web-based assessment tools\, such as NOAA’s Digital Coast tools. The course will include a guided exercise in which participants will learn to apply these tools in conducting a vulnerability assessment in their coastal communities.  This course will build on the first course of the series\, Coastal Hazards Awareness\, by supplementing the awareness knowledge with tools and skills for practical use. \nTarget Audience:\nAs a performance-level course\, the target audience for this course are coastal managers\, emergency managers and planners that perform coastal hazard assessments\, vulnerability assessments\, and develop hazard mitigation\, recovery and resilience plans in coastal areas. DESCRIPTION:2/23-4/2  14 CM Credits \nUsing land use planning measures to respond to advance sustainability and resilience of both the natural and built environment requires at least a basic understanding of the environment and of ecological principles. The American Planning Association has recently established a Certified Environmental Planner credential in recognition of the expertise required in these areas. This will be a seminar style course encouraging interaction and shared knowledge among participants in identifying planning measures that are appropriate to address the relationships between and among land uses and ecological systems. The course will begin with an introduction to how the environment works and how to find and use environmental data. Participants will choose an issue regarding air\, water\, land or other environmental impacts and examine how planning solutions mitigate or merely shift these impacts. We will conclude with examinations of policies on sustainability\, climate change and other topics of interest to course members. DESCRIPTION:1/5-2/12 \nInstructor:  L. Nicolas Ronderos is Senior Planner for Community Development at Regional Plan Association. His work focuses on the interrelation between transportation\, land use and real estate. Bringing together a regional perspective  with local planning knowledge and development expertise has enabled him to fashion solutions for communities big and small. At the center of this juncture zoning plays an important role: it relates potential growth\, actual capacity and smart  development. As land use and zoning specialist for RPA\, Nicolas is charged with analyzing municipalities existing codes to assess their design performance and real estate implications\, giving public testimony and evaluation of zoning actions and helping shape new language to guide development. RPA works in the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut Metropolitan Area and this has allowed him to work in different types of communities from New York City to the suburban fringe. Nicolas holds a B.A. in Anthropology with a minor in History of Technology  from Los  Andes University and a Masters of Science in Urban Policy Analysis and Management from The New School University. SUMMARY:BOCEP: Site Planning Analysis (CM | 14.0)
DESCRIPTION:Course 11/3 – 12/18 \nContextual site analysis is a pre-design research activity which focuses on the existing\, imminent and potential conditions on and around a project site. It is\, in a sense\, an inventory of all the pressures\, forces and situations and their interactions at the property where our project will be built. The major role of contextual site analysis in design is that of informing us about our site prior to beginning our design concepts so that our early thinking about our building can incorporate meaningful responses to external conditions. Typical site issues addressed in a contextual analysis are site location\, size\, shape\, contours\, drainage patterns\, zoning and set-backs\, utilities\, significant on site features (buildings\, trees\,etc.)\, surrounding traffic\, neighborhood patterns\, views to and from the site and climate. As planners and designers\, we need to know something about these issues in order to design a successful building that not only meets its internal responsibilities (functions) but that also relates well to its external environment. Since our building will exist for several years\, our contextual analysis should attempt to deal with potential future conditions as well as the ones we can observe on the site today. DESCRIPTION:Urban planning is the discipline that explores several aspects of the built and social environments of municipalities and communities. As such it decides on the future growth of our towns\, cities and neighborhoods through analysis and decision making. This course will familiarize participants with the basic elements of planning: principles of planning\, the comprehensive plan\, plan adoption and specific plans. Participants will learn how planning is practiced in the United States\, and explore how to apply the concepts in their communities. In their final assignment\, students will describe the steps to develop a plan for your community. The final assignment is meant to be realistic — in fact\, we want you to use it to start planning in your community! Many people find themselves doing urban planning without any formal training in the subject. Others want to be effective citizen planners\, but don’t know where to start. If this describes you\, this course is for you. Nicolas Ronderos\, who brings a distinct perspective  as a planner\, anthropologist\, and policy and real estate expert\, helps you learn the fundamentals of urban planning. Like running a successful restaurant\, urban planning is more difficult than it most people know.
