SUMMARY:Duke Farms Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Duke Farms serves as a model of environmental stewardship and inspires visitors to become informed stewards of the land. It is a place of education\, enjoyment and research that enhances the environmental health of the region.\nThrough the beauty of its natural setting\, the diversity of its wildlife\, and the scope and quality of its educational programs\, demonstrations and research\, Duke Farms inspires people to transform their approach to conservation and to start building a more sustainable future. For more information\, visit www.dukefarms.org. \nThe walking tour will begin in the Farm Barn Orientation Center (2nd Floor Conference Room) with an overview presentation of Duke Farms. First\, we will view the recently renovated\, historic Farm Barn\, which received LEED Platinum certification in 2013. After viewing the Farm Barn\, the group will walk to various other structures on the property and include such sustainability highlights as bio-swales in the surface parking lots\, geothermal wells\, constructed wetlands restored natural wetlands. \nThe program will begin promptly at 10am and last for approximately 2 hours. The tour includes walking\, so please wear comfortable shoes and bring reusable water bottles to stay hydrated. Insect spray of your choice is recommended. Refreshments and light fare will be served after the tour. \nAt the conclusion of the guided tour\, visitors are invited to explore Duke Farms on their own\, which includes the ruins of the uncompleted mansion and several beautiful man-made lakes. DESCRIPTION:This one-day class is meant for pond owners\, pond managers\, landscape architects\, engineers and anyone involved with the design\, management or maintenance of ponds. This course is structured to help you make the proper decisions regarding the appearance\, function or up-keep of your pond. Starting with design\, learn how to build a pond\, including the construction of embankments and dams and the selection and installation of liners.
