SUMMARY:Preservation New Jersey’s 2015 Resiliency Workshop Series: Going Up? Coastal Flood Mitigation
DESCRIPTION:Approved for 3.5 AICP CM Credits (#e.29851). Check-in 1-2 pm. Online registration (Eventbrite) at www.preservationnj.org \nOne of the great challenges of communities living on the New Jersey coast or along its some 18\,126 miles of rivers and streams is how to prepare for inevitable flooding. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) requires that buildings be elevated\, moved out of a floodplain\, or acquired and demolished to comply with the new flood maps. The hope is that elevating will keep buildings out of the water\, but what do wholesale elevations do to a community? \n\nHow do you elevate buildings without adversefy affecting historic character?\nWhat do elevations do to a streetscape? What are the best design options?\nWhat happens to the residents who can’t afford to elevate or rebuild?\n\nThis workshop will take place at the historic Bay Head Yacht Club (listed on the State and National Registers)\, which was substantially damaged during Super Storm Sandy. It has since been elevated\, and many original historic features have been restored. The facility is not yet open to the public\, so this event offers a preview of the progress so far. \nSPEAKERS: \nJustin A.
