SUMMARY:Age-Friendly Communities (CM Pending | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:America is confronting a silver tsunami. For the next 20 years\, 10\,000 baby boomers turn 65 daily\, joining an already growing number over 80+. This profound demographic transition is challenging communities struggling with a tough economy\, and\, is overwhelming to government and community policymakers at all levels. Preparing for this wave is viewed as a political and economic liability – impacting social security\, healthcare costs and services..and placing an added burden on the young. As the vast majority of older adults want to age in place\, they are creating a demand for communities that are age friendly. Age-friendly communities are friendly to all ages\, not just older adults. Ultimately\, young and old want the same things: an environment that allows them to participate and thrive. Financing age-friendly initiatives do not have to be costly. Planners and local governments should give attention to: holistic approach of multigenerational planning\, work underway in cities\, such as New York and Atlanta\, taking creative steps to make their neighborhoods age-friendly and tools such as the Villages movement for self-empowerment on aging-in-place. This session will examine some tools and resources to foster communities friendly to all ages and highlight on-the-ground strategies to ‘fund’ changes. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Ethical Challenges for Planning Consultants (CM Ethics | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Many ethical questions for planners frequently involve private practice: • As a planning consultant\, am I supposed to buy drinks for public sector planners who are clients and/or potential clients at a conference reception as part of marketing? • The retired city planning director accepts a job as a consultant with a private planning firm. His first project is to respond an RFP from his former employer. Is this a conflict? • A planning consulting firm frequently submits proposals using subconsultants who are specifically qualified for the work. When they get the contract\, they assign less qualified employees to the project. What are the ethical implications of this practice? This moderated panel discussion will examine situations common to private consultants (in contexts that also often include public sector planners) from a variety of perspectives\, taking into consideration several variables. Audience members will also be invited to submit their ethical questions electronically for the panel to discuss. This session will familiarize attendees with the standards of ethical behavior according to the AICP Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and the nuances of applying the Code appropriately and responsibly. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Federal Tools for Aging and Livable Communities (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Transforming our communities so that they prosper\, thrive and grow to their full potential by making it possible for all people to achieve and maintain well-being has become particularly challenging with the economic crisis confronting our nation. Financial distress\, budget cuts\, and limited resources are undermining and eliminating programs and services\, as well as reshaping the policies that impact the most vulnerable in our society. Amid this chaotic environment\, there are initiatives that are demonstrating leadership in addressing the needs and improving the lives of older Americans. This session will explore promising efforts to mobilize and innovate Federal solutions to aging issues cross-agency and intra-agency such as: creating a single agency entry point\, providing a forum for dialogue or serving as a repository for policy and programs related to aging. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Aging-Friendly Agenda (CM Pending | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:The graying of America and the global economic crisis are powerful forces that have converged this year\, critically impacting the ability of communities to address the emerging hardship needs of older Americans. A 2010 nationwide survey of communities by the National Association of Area Agencies – the first survey conducted in 2005 – reveals only limited progress in advancing the goal to create a “livable community” for all ages – many are struggling just to maintain status quo. One of the few exceptions is Philadelphia which has the highest proportion of older persons (age 60+) of any ten largest cities in the nation. Philadelphia Corporation for Aging(PCA) has developed an agenda based on EPA’s Aging Initiative model which integrates active aging and smart growth. Age-Friendly Philadelphia is a research\, planning\, and policy agenda to improve the overall quality of life for the City’s seniors. An award-winning program\, the premise is that all ages will benefit from improvements to the physical and social environment that promote an age-friendly city. PCA is the catalyst for generating non-traditional partnerships around the common purpose of four principles for active aging: healthy eating\, social capital\, mobility\, and flexible and accessible housing. This innovative approach to an age-friendly city with building strong alliances as a centerpiece is an inspiring model for other communities. \nClick here to register.
