SUMMARY:Webcast: Integrating Sea Level Rise into Plans
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar we will explore how local planners incorporate sea level rise projections into different planning processes and documents. How does a local jurisdiction decide which sea level scenario to use? Then how has this been implemented into different planning documentation? Planners from three different jurisdictions will join us in discussing how they have been accomplishing this work in Santa Monica\, California\, Virginia Beach\, Virginia and Charleston\, South Carolina. This webcast is hosted by the APA HMDR Division. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Webcast: Reshoring - The Urgent Need to Bring Manufacturing Back to America
DESCRIPTION:Register \nAmerican companies’ are on a quest to Reshore production. According to a 2014 study\, 54% of US manufacturers over $1billion in revenue are considering Reshoring some or all of their manufacturing. Site evaluation and the correct site selection are critical to the success of these projects. Establishing manufacturing at the right site has an economic multiplier effect on communities. Manufacturing jobs pay well and workers use their wages to buy homes\, cars and other goods in the local community. Everybody wins. Reshoring is a very popular idea among businesses\, their customers and governments where jobs growth will have the most impact. But it’s not that simple. Reshoring requires a carefully crafted journey through innovation\, automation\, localization of products and site/community selection. You will learn about the major components in this decision and what you need to develop a business case to bring manufacturing back to specific communities. We will also learn about some reshoring failures\, where selecting the wrong site had devastating results.

SUMMARY:Webcast: Housing for People with Disabilities: A Civil Rights Lens
DESCRIPTION:Register \nThis presentation will discuss significant changes in housing for people with disabilities over the last several years. Enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Supreme Court’s decision in Olmstead v. L.C. – which requires public entities to offer their services to people with disabilities in “the integrated setting” – has led to statewide system reform of housing systems\, moving away from congregate disability-specific housing to expanding access to scattered-site supportive housing. Ms. Barkoff will discuss the requirements of the ADA and Olmstead and describe the housing provisions in recent Olmstead settlement agreements. The changing landscape of disability housing has also been impacted by changes in the disability service system\, including new requirements for settings in which publicly-funded community-based services can be provided. Ms. Barkoff will explain how these changes in the service system may lead to change in housing systems. Finally\, Mr. Frost will describe implementation of an Olmstead settlement agreement in his home state of New Hampshire. \nCM 1.5

SUMMARY:Webcast: Responding to the FCC New Collocation Rules – How to Avoid "Deemed Granted”
DESCRIPTION:Register \nThe FCC adopted new rules at its Oct. 17 meeting that are likely to require changes in the way local governments respond to applications for siting wireless towers\, and for adding antennas to\, and modifying\, existing structures. The rules could necessitate an immediate review and revision of wireless siting ordinances in many communities\, and have important implications for the way states and localities deal with siting of wireless facilities in historic districts and environmentally sensitive areas. The change in the rules may also affect the approach of public agencies\, schools\, special districts and local governments to leasing of their own property. \nCM 1.5

SUMMARY:Webinar: Participant Experience Design: New Communication Strategies to Make Public Engagement More Effective
DESCRIPTION:Click Here to Register\nPlanners currently use diverse engagement tools and processes to reach “beyond the usual suspects” and get outside of City Hall to gather input. However\, reports\, findings\, draft and published plans all are still communicated in very traditional forms – long\, jargon-filled documents with limited ways to explore the content non-linearly or comment on it. For example\, even beautiful and well-designed PDF plan documents can miss communicating the true findings\, because they are stuck in one dimension with long\, dense blocks of text. Interactive media\, instant publishing\, and social media have changed the way people consume and process information\, which has raised expectations for how planners should communicate. Think about the New York Times’ long-form journalism: short videos\, interactive maps and charts\, and other interactive media. What if we communicated plans like that? During this webinar\, we will: 1. Begin by exploring inspiring possibilities for communicating complex topics\, scenarios\, and plan documents in simple\, intuitive ways; this overview draws from strong engagement principles and summarizes “what you need to know” when planning and budgeting; 2. Specifically discover how interaction design\, gamification\, and publishing for different devices can reach more (and more diverse) audiences compared to traditional media; 3. Share examples of data visualization techniques to more effectively showcase findings and results; and 4. Open the “floor” for participants to share their experiences\, challenges\, and ideas. Each focus area will be presented around promising examples of recent planning projects from around North America and feature key takeaways that planners can start using today.
