SUMMARY:South Hoboken Waterfront Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Please RSVP to APA-NJ Professional Development Officer Christopher Brown \n\nThe City of Hoboken’s South Hoboken Waterfront has been named a Great Place in New Jersey for 2013 by the American Planning Association-New Jersey Chapter (APA-NJ).   The City will be hosting a Walking Tour on Friday\, October 18 from 2pm-4pm. The Walking Tour will highlight the South Hoboken Waterfront and present the processes which were involved in its industrial-to-recreational transformation.  The walking tour will begin at Pier A Park\, on the corner of Sinatra Drive and Newark Street. Participants are strongly encouraged to commute to Hoboken via public transit. \nThe Hoboken Waterfront first served as a recreational port in the 19th century\, when steamboats carried Manhattanites looking to escape the bustle of urban life to the sanctuary of nature. Two centuries later\, the former resort community of Hoboken has evolved into a thriving city\, and the waterfront has become a leafy sanctuary for people across the region. The Hoboken Waterfront has transformed in recent decades from an industrial seaport into a bustling recreational center. \nThe most prominent feature of the Hoboken Waterfront is the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway\, which stretches in its entirety approximately 18.5 miles along the Hudson River across nine (9) municipalities. Pier A Park is located on a pier in the Hudson River extending from the southern end of Hoboken\, (just north of the Hoboken Terminal) north to First Street. Pier C Park is located to the north of Pier A Park\, on a pier starting at the intersection of Fourth Street and Sinatra Drive. The portion of the  Hudson River Waterfront Walkway along this area is a wide sidewalk plaza that extends from Hoboken Terminal north to Fourth Street and is situated on the east side of Frank Sinatra Drive. \nThe South Hoboken Waterfront is a source of civic pride to Hoboken residents and serves as an outlet for physical activities and a temporary escape from an urban setting. Its proximity to the multi-modal transit hub at Hoboken Terminal lends itself to being a regional open space destination in the tri-state area. Visitors can access the Waterfront’s open space facilities via NJ Transit Rail\, NYNJ PATH subway trains\, Hudson-Bergen Light Rail\, NJ Transit Bus\, Hoboken Hop Shuttle Bus and NY Waterway Ferry.  \n* This tour has applied for Certification Maintenance Credits for AICP Planning Professionals.

SUMMARY:Valley Arts District Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Come explore Orange’s Valley Arts District – a strikingly rich multicultural community nested in the Valley of West Orange and Orange. This is a terrific opportunity for planners to uncover the history and vibrant culture in the Valley Arts District. This area of Orange and West Orange has been experiencing a true renaissance where residents and visitors can now enjoy theatre\, arts education\, locally grown foods\, affordable artist live-work space\, public art\, and live music all within easy walking distance of each other and public transportation. This revitalization has been spurred by the Housing and Neighborhood Development Services (HANDS)\, Inc in their efforts to provide long-term affordable commercial arts and residential spaces to attract artists to the developing neighborhood. \nThe narrated one hour walk will include a tour of former industrial and commercial buildings rehabilitated by HANDS and now occupied by local artists\, innovators\, entrepreneurs and arts-based non-profit organizations. In addition to learning about the work of HANDS\, you’ll discover Orange’s origins as New Jersey’s “Hat City\,” see some hidden gems and get a peek at the growing artist community. Highlights along the tour will include examples of a community earth oven\, a hydroponic greenhouse\, a youth arts studio\, No Name Hat Factory formerly owned by the Stetson brothers\, and much more. Participants will also hear about future efforts for the neighborhood as part of the Creative Orange initiative – part of Creative New Jersey’s statewide effort championing creativity as a tool for discovering innovative approaches for a sustainable community and a dynamic economy. \nThe tour will begin and end at Hat City Kitchen\, 459 Valley Street in Orange and will be narrated by HANDS senior staff and Executive Director\, Patrick Morrissy. \nRSVP to Tiffany Robinson by email at ecdc.nj@gmail.com by June 13.

SUMMARY:City Planner Book Club Meet Up (CM 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Our planning careers are pivoted on building communities\, both physically and socially. But what about building literary communities? The premise of the CPBC is simple. Every three months\, APA-NJ and APA-NYM will choose a different book for membership to read. Our current selection is Crabgrass Frontiers: The Suburbanization of the United States. On the third month of these quarterly cycles\, the chapters will organize an in-person meet-up to discuss the featured book at length. Between the time of introduction and meeting-up\, CPBC members are encouraged to participate in an online forum to share their ideas in real-time. Our September 2012 meet-up will be held in Jersey City’s The Merchant Bar and Restaurant from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. \nRSVP with APA-NJ PDO Christopher Brown at PDO@njplanning.org.

SUMMARY:Green Building & Environmental Sustainability Element Tool (CM |1.5)
DESCRIPTION:The Green Building and Environmental Sustainability Element (GBESE) is an adopted element of the Municipal Master Plan. In August 2008\, the NJ Municipal Land Use Law was amended to include the GBESE in the list of permitted Master Plan Elements. It describes the Element as the following: “A green buildings and environmental sustainability plan element\, which shall provide for\, encourage\, and promote the efficient use of natural resources and the installation and usage of renewable energy systems; consider the impact of buildings on the local\, regional and global environment; allow ecosystems to function naturally; conserve and reuse water; treat storm water on-site; and optimize climatic conditions through site orientation and design.” This webinar will address the creation and adoption of a GBESE which\, like all Master Plan Elements\, is intended to guide land-use decisions and provides the basis for ordinances addressing sustainability and land use issues. Representatives from the planning community\, including the acclaimed Sustainable JerseyTM certification program\, will discuss the program’s GBESE tool for certification\, how to introduce sustainability concepts into local planning documents\, and will highlight some examples from high performing sustainability plans. The APA-NJ’s Sustainability Committee will discuss another approach to developing sustainable master plan language by infusing sustainability concepts throughout each of the Master Plan’s traditional plan elements. And a planning practitioner will discuss the process for working with your town planning board to develop the appropriate sustainability language for your community’s GBESE. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Understanding the Redevelopment Process and Your Role in It
DESCRIPTION:APA-NJ Partnership with NJRI\nRedevelopment is a procedure used to revitalize distressed neighborhoods\, address the effects of underused and neglected parcels and enhance the economic conditions of a municipality. Accompanied by sound planning and execution\, redevelopment ultimately allows residents\, stakeholders and local government officials to produce invaluable changes to our communities. \nThe purpose of this course is to further educate locally appointed and elected municipal officials and community based organizations about the Redevelopment process. More specifically\, this course will: \n\nDiscuss the roles and responsibilities of participants in the redevelopment process\nProvide illustrative examples of short- and long-term impacts that planning board decisions may and have produced on developing\, distressed and/or vibrant communities and downtown corridors; and\nIdentify and explain legislation\, regulatory tools and incentives that are used in the redevelopment process.\n\nFinally\, this course will provide grassroots organizations with information that will enable them to sufficiently communicate with participants in the redevelopment process when initiatives are envisioned\, initiated or underway in their communities. \nClick here to register
