SUMMARY:City Planner Book Club Meet-Up
DESCRIPTION:A pioneering urban economist presents a myth-shattering look at the majesty and greatness of cities.America is an urban nation\, yet cities get a bad rap: they’re dirty\, poor\, unhealthy\, environmentally unfriendly . . . or are they? In this revelatory book\, Edward Glaeser\, a leading urban economist\, declares that cities are actually the healthiest\, greenest\, and richest (in both cultural and economic terms) places to live. He travels through history and around the globe to reveal the hidden workings of cities and how they bring out the best in humankind. Using intrepid reportage\, keen analysis\, and cogent argument\, Glaeser makes an urgent\, eloquent case for the city’s importance and splendor\, offering inspiring proof that the city is humanity’s greatest creation and our best hope for the future. \nQuestions?  Contact APA-NJ PDO\, Christopher Brown at pdo@njplanning.org \nSource: http://www.amazon.com/Triumph-City-Greatest-Invention-Healthier/dp/0143120549

SUMMARY:South Hoboken Waterfront Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Please RSVP to APA-NJ Professional Development Officer Christopher Brown \n\nThe City of Hoboken’s South Hoboken Waterfront has been named a Great Place in New Jersey for 2013 by the American Planning Association-New Jersey Chapter (APA-NJ).   The City will be hosting a Walking Tour on Friday\, October 18 from 2pm-4pm. The Walking Tour will highlight the South Hoboken Waterfront and present the processes which were involved in its industrial-to-recreational transformation.  The walking tour will begin at Pier A Park\, on the corner of Sinatra Drive and Newark Street. Participants are strongly encouraged to commute to Hoboken via public transit. \nThe Hoboken Waterfront first served as a recreational port in the 19th century\, when steamboats carried Manhattanites looking to escape the bustle of urban life to the sanctuary of nature. Two centuries later\, the former resort community of Hoboken has evolved into a thriving city\, and the waterfront has become a leafy sanctuary for people across the region. The Hoboken Waterfront has transformed in recent decades from an industrial seaport into a bustling recreational center. \nThe most prominent feature of the Hoboken Waterfront is the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway\, which stretches in its entirety approximately 18.5 miles along the Hudson River across nine (9) municipalities. Pier A Park is located on a pier in the Hudson River extending from the southern end of Hoboken\, (just north of the Hoboken Terminal) north to First Street. Pier C Park is located to the north of Pier A Park\, on a pier starting at the intersection of Fourth Street and Sinatra Drive. The portion of the  Hudson River Waterfront Walkway along this area is a wide sidewalk plaza that extends from Hoboken Terminal north to Fourth Street and is situated on the east side of Frank Sinatra Drive. \nThe South Hoboken Waterfront is a source of civic pride to Hoboken residents and serves as an outlet for physical activities and a temporary escape from an urban setting. Its proximity to the multi-modal transit hub at Hoboken Terminal lends itself to being a regional open space destination in the tri-state area. Visitors can access the Waterfront’s open space facilities via NJ Transit Rail\, NYNJ PATH subway trains\, Hudson-Bergen Light Rail\, NJ Transit Bus\, Hoboken Hop Shuttle Bus and NY Waterway Ferry.  \n* This tour has applied for Certification Maintenance Credits for AICP Planning Professionals.

This area of Orange and West Orange has been experiencing a true renaissance where residents and visitors can now enjoy theatre\, arts education\, locally grown foods\, affordable artist live-work space\, public art\, and live music all within easy walking distance of each other and public transportation.
