SUMMARY:Webinar: Modernizing Transportation Agencies
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\n  \nTransportation needs always exceed funding. At the same time\, transportation projects are expected to do more than ever — move cars\, trucks\, transit\, bikes and pedestrians safely and efficiently. Transportation for America works with transportation agencies to find ways to make money go farther and to identify ways to make better move all users of the system safely. This technical assistance includes training on coordinating transportation and land use\, practical design and the needs of all users. Then Transportation for America analyzed the transportation agency’s project development process to identify where rules\, procedures and culture might interfere with the delivery of cost-effective\, multimodal projects.

SUMMARY:Multimodal Way Finding (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:New York is known the world over as a city of walkers and straphangers\, not to mention one of the most popular tourist destinations anywhere with five very distinct boroughs\, clashing street configurations\, and a variety of naming and numbering conventions. Despite huge volumes of residents and visitors walking and using transit\, most existing on-street directional information is aimed at drivers. To fill this gap the New York City Department of Transportation chose an international design consortium known as PentaCityGroup (PCG) in 2011 to develop a standardized\, map-based\, citywide Pedestrian Wayfinding System. PCG is comprised of wayfinding specialists CityID\, industrial designers Billings Jackson Design\, graphic designers Pentagram\, cartographers and map database developers T-Kartor\, and engineers and urban designers the RBA Group. The first phase of the program is rolling out this summer with additional phases and program expansion in the works. This webinar will introduce participants to the basics of wayfinding with a focus on the system design and program development in NYC. There will be a Q & A session at the end of the webinar. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Highway Bus Rapid Transit (CM |1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Bus Rapid Transit – or BRT – is bus service that includes enhanced travel ways\, stations and equipment. BRT offers passengers faster\, more reliable service than traditional bus service. It does so by providing more frequent service and reducing traffic delays by giving BRT vehicles priority over general traffic. This type of service can be implemented faster less expensively than rail transit while still offering many of the same attributes and benefits as rail transit. Because the public is relatively unfamiliar with BRT\, public education and marketing are very important to the success of this type of service. Early and frequent communication with transit users\, supporters and funders can help transit providers overcome stereotypes and misperceptions regarding bus usage\, speed and reliability that can hinder BRT or freeway BOS implementation. Freeway bus-on-shoulder is simply a technique to achieve transit priority on freeways. Just as bus rapid transit often includes running-way priority via dedicated lanes and signal priority\, bus-on-shoulder achieves priority by allowing bus operations on highway shoulders. Transit vehicles are allowed to travel on the shoulder when speeds decrease to a certain threshold on the mainline (typically 35 mph). Buses can then travel faster than the mainline traffic\, improving service reliability and making buses more competitive with personal automobiles. This increases ridership and builds and strengthens positive perceptions of bus transit and its provider. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Understanding the Impacts and Benefits of Freight Capacity Improvements: Environmental Justice and Freight Infrastructure (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of the webinar will be to orient planners to the issues of environmental justice as they relate specifically to freight operations and freight infrastructure\, including air and sea ports\, railroads\, intermodal facilities\, inland warehouse and distribution centers\, and the roads and bridges that serve them. To help planners understand and address community concerns\, presenters will discuss the origins and current status of federal environmental justice policy and offer infrastructure case studies from the Chicago area and Southern California. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Planning for Goods Movement: Players\, Trends\, Challenges (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Planning for the movement of goods through local communities depends upon a complex set of interactions involving public stakeholders at different levels of government and private stakeholders with both local and global interests. This webinar provides an overview of logistics\, the supply chain\, and the various components and functions involved in getting goods from origin to the final customer. We’ll show how freight enters the port complex\, and the processes involved getting goods the point of consumption. The discussion includes key trends in the goods movement arena and the challenges that these trends pose to the planner. These challenges include capacity constraints\, environmental pressures\, system security\, and lack of financing for needed improvements.   \nClick Here to Register
