SUMMARY:The Practice and Principles Of Form Based Codes (CM Approved | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Many presentations about Form-Based Code are like schoolyard lectures on the opposite sex. They sound authoritative. This session will present experience-based\, common sense\, unadorned information about development regulations based first in form and second in use. \nAcross the country municipalities seeking to reshape dysfunctional auto-oriented development continue to replace conventional zoning codes with new codes that primarily regulate form and only secondarily regulate use. As the fundamentally different approach of Form-Based Codes becomes more popular\, practitioners are looking for credible guidance on how to draft and implement form-based codes in their area. In this webinar\, we will share lessons distilled from over a decade of experience implementing and administering municipal form-based development and will introduce community planners to the core principles of Form-Based Codes. \nPresenters include: Jason Beske\, Principal Planner for Arlington County Virginia\, speaking about Form-Based Code administration and process based on his experience in three municipalities\, Geoffrey Ferrell\, one of the originators of the modern practice of Form-Based Coding whose firm’s codes are in use in numerous municipalities\, and Philip Dales\, land use attorney at Hyatt & Weber\, P.A.\, in Annapolis\, Maryland. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: New Directions in Planning (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:In Maryland we are leading the nation in not only thinking about change\, but in preparing for the future. This session will highlight the emerging importance of development economics in realizing land use visions. The linkage between land use plans\, implementation strategies and revenue generation for delivering infrastructure\, will be discussed. Understanding revenue projections by land use is an important link to infrastructure staging keyed to development scenarios and the ability of builders and governments to deliver the infrastructure necessary to ensure land use plans are sustainable. Case studies will be used to illustrate how municipal finances and the impact of development on economic sustainability can serve as a mechanism for moving a land use vision forward from concept to reality. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Webinar: Integrated Clean Energy Strategies for Sustainable Communities (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:This session is a primer to explore the integration of sustainable energy strategies into the urban context\, starting from the earliest stages of planning to ensure heightened environmental performance at the building\, site and community scale. Strategic energy planning\, the setting of realistic targets and goals and developing a systematic strategic plan for clean energy integration and implementation will also be examined. A systems-based approach to town planning which includes an analysis of eight essential town systems: social\, commerce\, mobility\, food\, water\, waste\, energy and biological\, will set the framework for the discussion. Suggestions for incremental\, phased-in and decentralized strategies that include clean energy as a part of redevelopment projects will be discussed. Specific topical areas of discussion include: Incorporating technology policy into urban planning\, New transportation policies that can positively and negatively affect energy usage\, Urban form and design strategies that can harness natural energy\, Tool kit ideas for specific design issues\, Code and regulatory suggestions for integrated clean energy. Upon completion of the session\, attendees will understand: Energy issues and their relationship to town planning and design\, The relationship between holistic town planning and energy systems engineering\, The key elements in developing a strategic energy plan for a complex organization\, The variety of program options available to planners when attempting to affect energy usage in a community\, and How strategic energy plans can combine concepts of efficiency improvements with land use policies. Attendees will leave with an overview of clean energy issues related to planning and design\, a checklist for evaluating Integrated Energy Planning (IEP) in their neighborhoods\, various ‘tool kit’ suggestions for integrating clean energy\, and will be directed to sources for more in-depth study. \nClick Here to Register
