At its May board meeting, President Chuck Latini announced the appointment of Alex Dougherty as Professional Development Officer for Continuing Education. He stated, “Alex has already been assisting the Chapter in a variety of important ways, including building partnerships with allied organizations and ensuring professional credits are obtained for planners in broad array of offerings relevant to our practitioners. He has hit the ground running and we’re thrilled to have him join our dynamic team.”

Alexander Dougherty is a dedicated and innovative urban planner with a keen eye for creative solutions and a passion for community development. Holding a Master’s degree in City & Regional Planning from Rutgers’ Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning & Public Policy, Alex has honed his expertise in all facets of urban planning and public policy, with a particular focus on development and redevelopment strategies.
Driven by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a commitment to service, Alex actively contributes to the planning profession by volunteering his time, and mentoring aspiring planners. His contributions have been recognized with accolades, including an award from the New Jersey Planning Officials for his outstanding leadership and dedication to the Town of Dover’s land use planning initiatives.
Currently serving as the Supervising Planner for the Town of Dover, Alex oversees the Planning and Economic Development Department, where he continues to shape the future of the community through strategic planning efforts.
In addition to his role in municipal planning, Alex is the founder of Dougherty Planning & Development, LLC (DPD), a consultancy firm specializing in urban planning solutions. As a seasoned professional, he frequently serves as an expert witness on land use matters statewide, drawing upon his extensive experience and expertise. Mr. Dougherty has presented at the League of Municipalities, land use symposiums, and has been called upon to certify board members, newly appointed to land use boards across the state in city planning land use matters.
Notably, Alex holds dual certifications as a Licensed Professional Planner (PP) in the State of New Jersey and as a Professional Planner within the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
