The Municipality of Princeton is seeking a dedicated and versatile planning professional to join the Planning Department as a Senior Planner. This position is an exciting opportunity to participate in the shaping of Princeton as we complete our first Master Plan overhaul since 1996. Ideal candidates are highly motivated professionals with the ability to work effectively with Municipal staff, appointed and elected officials, and a diverse community of public stakeholders.
The Municipality of Princeton has a population of 30,681 (2020 Census) and is home to several world-renowned institutions of higher learning. Located in the heart of New Jersey and directly between New York City and Philadelphia, Princeton balances commercial and residential development with open space preservation and historical preservation.
Examples of Work: Review land development proposals and determine compliance with state, county, and/or municipal regulations; prepare various types of reports for the Planning Board, Municipal Council, other boards, commissions and committees including graphic, statistical and written presentations; assist in designing and drafting proposals and preparing graphic information; prepare maps representing existing and proposed land use and other data for submission or presentation; represent the Planning Department as a staff liaison to various land-use boards, commissions and committees.
Practical planning methodology, urban development, urban design, and land use economics; federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and codes governing planning and zoning; knowledge of the problems associated with the growth of communities such as adequate community facilities, historic preservation, economic development; traffic conditions and affordable housing; proficiency with computer systems and applications, including GIS programs (ESRI preferred) and Microsoft Office; comfortable discussing ideas with the public and participating in community relations; ability to work closely in a team environment; ability to analyze and systematically compile technical and statistical information, and to prepare technical reports; ability to present, discuss and execute innovative ideas; ability to manage multiple projects and duties effectively; ability to prioritize and work within time constraints; excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to keep current with literature in the field of planning and with current trends of thought and significant developments in present day planning activities; ability to prepare and manage correspondence and maintain records, reports, maps, plans, charts and files; other duties as needed.
Requirements: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree including or supplemented by 21 semester hour credits in professional planning subjects such as the principles of land use planning, history of city planning, planning project design, and planning law and administration; experience with community engagement, master planning, and/or in municipal, county, regional, or state planning; though not required, special consideration will be given to applicants having attained a master’s degree in Planning or a related field, American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification, and/or a New Jersey License to Practice as a Professional Planner (PP).
Must satisfy employer paid physical, drug screen and criminal background check. Must have a valid NJ Driver’s License in good standing if driving municipal vehicles. NJ residency required by State Statute. R.S.52:14-7. EOE – M/F/V/H
Salary Range: $67,000-$71,000 Deadline: 1/22/2023
