Deputy Director of Planning (Somerset)

Somerset County is seeking experienced, detail oriented and motivated professional to serve as the Deputy Director of the newly formed Office of Planning, Policy and Economic Development. Somerset County is a recognized leader in planning in New Jersey.

The Office of Planning, Policy and Economic Development works with the Board of County Commissioners, County departments, divisions and Boards and Commissions, local governments, non-profits, and the business community to coordinate efforts to build a strong economic environment, develop high-wage employment growth, and protect open space and historic resources throughout the County. The Office oversees the Office of Economic Development, Office of County GIS Services and the Office of the Cultural and Heritage Commission. The Office serves as staff to the Somerset County Planning Board, Somerset County Agriculture Development Board, Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission, the Somerset County Energy Council, the Open Space Advisory Committee, Green Leadership Hub and the Regional Center Partnership of Somerset County.

The Deputy Director assists the Director of the Office of Planning, Policy and Economic Development in effectuating the short and long-range planning objectives of the County. This position will assist the Director in the overall administration of the office and will oversee the Office of County GIS Services, the Land Development Review Section, the Administrative Section and Special Projects Section. Assists the Director in the daily overall operations of the Office managing the administrative and support activities, assuring the execution of office policy and specific work tasks to ensure the efficient operation of the Planning Board, Cultural Heritage Office, Energy Council, the County Agricultural Development Board and other committees and groups supported by the Office. The Deputy Director will oversee the County’s wastewater planning and environmental planning efforts. The position will work directly with the Director to advance a wide range of planning efforts and advise the Director on a wide range of existing and new policy and program initiatives. In conjunction with the Director, the Deputy Director will interact with elected officials at all levels of government, municipal, regional, and federal officials to help develop and advance County positions by keeping abreast of pertinent state and federal regulations and new programs.

The Deputy Director assumes direct responsibility for the operation, budgeting, signing of legal instruments and general administration of the Office in the absence of the Director. The Deputy Director functions in this capacity as second in charge. The position will have the authority to execute any official documents in the absence of the Director. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.


A bachelor’s degree in planning or closely related field. A master’s degree may be substituted for two years of direct planning experience. N. J. Professional Planners License and American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is required. Ten (10) years of experience in local and regional planning with supervisory experience is required.


Experience with or a combination of economic development, redevelopment planning, transportation planning, wastewater planning, environmental planning and or preservation (open space, farmland and historic) planning and community engagement is desired.
