Impacts of Credit on Accessing Affordable Housing.” This panel discussion will examine the post-recession lending and housing markets\, and their relation to the importance of one’s credit score. \nAccording to a recent Zillow report\, which highlights the difficulties in the housing market in the wake of the Great Recession\, homeownership is potentially out of reach for nearly a third of Americans. This is especially true for those seeking affordable housing. While lenders have implemented tighter credit restrictions as a response to the foreclosure crisis\, it has placed a cap on housing demand and is impeding a greater housing recovery. It will cover four of Prof. Nasar’s studies on pedestrians and cell phones and the evolution of his thinking about both beneficial and harmful effects of cell phones use among pedestrians. The studies include:1) a study of cell phone use\, fear of crime\, and safety from crime among college students\,2) a study to see if the distracted attention found among drivers using cell phones applied to pedestrians talking on cell phones\,3) a study of the safety of pedestrian behavior at crosswalks as it relates to use of mobile technology\, and4) an examination of emergency room admissions for accidents related to cell phone use among pedestrians. DESCRIPTION:  \nDownload the FlyerCoopertown Center Walking Tour \nIn 2005\, Lion’s Head Plaza in Somerdale Borough was a dying shopping mall characteristic of the “greyfields” found in many first generation suburbs. Located along the heavily traveled White Hose Pike (Route 30) at Evesham Road\, the center was 70% vacant. \nUnderstanding the need for a catalyst\, the Borough initiated a redevelopment process and established a cooperative working relationship with the property owner as well as neighboring Magnolia Borough\, in which a portion of the site is located. A new zoning scheme was crafted for the +/-50 acre site\, allowing for a mix of uses\, including retail\, office\, and market and affordable housing\, while also fostering a “town center” atmosphere with public spaces and streetscape and building design. A portion of the original shopping center was demolished in order to create a more open site design\, new buildings were constructed\, and the remaining portion of the center was completely renovated. The result is the re-branded Coopertowne Center\, which has followed the zoning scheme that had been previously implemented. \nAs plans for the revitalization and redevelopment of the Lion’s Head Plaza were advancing\, the Borough recognized that the project could be a catalyst for further land use changes in the area. The resulting plan for the Kennedy Boulevard Area\, adopted in 2009\, set the foundation for the revitalization of the area that when implemented\, will strengthen the connections between Coopertowne Center and the surrounding community and support a dynamic business environment. \nThe walking tour will explore the Coopertowne Center site as well as the Kennedy Boulevard Area (anchored by Borough Hall) to discuss the progress that has been made\, the work that is currently underway\, and where additional opportunities may be realized in the future. This event will be lead by Mayor Gary Passanante of Somerdale Borough and John Orrico\, the President of National Realty & Development Corp (redeveloper and owner of Coopertowne Center). The Borough’s redevelopment planner will also be on hand to add to the discussion. DESCRIPTION:In this second presentation on using GIS analysis for making planning decisions\, we will examine the landscape effects of residential development scenarios. Planners and resource managers have long sought to better control land development via the regulatory framework. Recent developments in GIS have made the development of policy scenarios relatively easy to document and analyze. Future residential development was simulated using GIS based on conventional and density-based zoning regulations for a set of Wisconsin communities. We then measure landscape fragmentation at complete build-out and compare policies between communities. DESCRIPTION:Managing stormwater runoff from land development is becoming more complex every day. In light of New Jersey’s recently adopted statewide Stormwater Management Rules\, engineers\, reviewers\, developers and others will need to acquire both greater knowledge and new skills. This three-day course is designed to address these needs by presenting the most pertinent and up-to-date information on the scientific and regulatory aspects of stormwater management in New Jersey. \nThe course will cover the recently adopted NJDEP Stormwater Management Rules\, including those dealing with groundwater recharge\, TSS and nutrient removal\, and stormwater quantity control. A presentation of the new NJDEP BMP Manual\, Groundwater Recharge Spreadsheet (NJGRS) and other technical aspects of the new rules will also be included. Landis to fulfill his dream of creating the “ideal community.”  A native of Philadelphia\, Landis imagined a city of factories\, stores\, schools\, churches\, and recreation hall surrounded by miles of farms\, orchards and vineyards. His dream took shape with the creation of Landis Avenue\, in August of 1861. The extra-wide\, tree lined street was reminiscent of the Champs-Elysee in Paris.” (www.mainstreetvineland.org) \nAs shopping habits and patterns changed over the years\, business owners along Landis Avenue faced declining revenues and community disinvestment. Landis Avenue suffered the same fate of many traditional main streets; fortunately\, however\, the City chose to revitalize the once faltering Landis Avenue. Vineland was designated as a Main Street Community in 2005 and has been hyper-focused on improving their traditional retail corridor ever since. DESCRIPTION:The Redevelopment Planning Law course\, a three-½-day dynamic and engaging course\, explores the legal and planning aspects of the redevelopment process in New Jersey. Instructors address major topics including redevelopment plans\, redeveloper agreements\, and current legal and public policy issues. Case studies are used to demonstrate the successes and pitfalls of redevelopment planning. Additionally\, students work with a fictitious municipality throughout the duration of the course demonstrating how the concepts are actually applied. Students taking this course can receive 20 Certification Maintenance (CM) or Law credits offered through the American Institute of Certified Planners. SUMMARY:Soils & Site Evaluation - For Septic Disposal Systems & Stormwater BMP's (CM I TBD)
DESCRIPTION:Thousands of septic systems and stormwater basins malfunction for the same reason: failure to understand how water moves (or doesn’t move!) through soil. You cannot hope to design and build these structures without a down-and-dirty understanding of these soils. That’s what this hands-on course is all about.  \nEvery day\, you will spend equal time moving between lectures in the classroom to soil pits in the field\, evaluating soils using your eyes\, hands\, and nose. You will observe\, record and evaluate the site-specific soil characteristics required to write and support a complete soil log\, as well as evaluate the soil and landscape data to determine design input. DESCRIPTION:Whether you are becoming certified for the first time or just need to recertify\, you will get the regulatory information you need to stay current with New Jersey’s UST requirements and help your clients or employer avoid potential penalty liability. \nThe NJ Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) regulates Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) and requires the professionals who work on them to be trained\, certified/recertified every three (3) years. When a person has notified the NJDEP of a discharge from an UST on or after November 4\, 2009\, that person must retain an LSRP when addressing regulated USTs. LSRPs may work on unregulated USTs (remediation or otherwise)\, but LSRPs are not required to be hired to remediate discharges from unregulated USTs. Certified Subsurface Evaluators may still be retained to remediate discharges from unregulated USTs without the supervision of an LSRP. The certifications for all other categories of UST services (i.e.\, installation\, closure\, tank testing\, and corrosion protection) still require the refresher course. The person responsible for conducting the remediation of a discharge from an unregulated UST who uses a Certified Subsurface Evaluator to remediate that discharge is required to employ an individual working for a business firm certified in the category of UST subsurface evaluation pursuant to the UST rules at N.J.A.C. 7:14B-16. \nTo learn more visit:  http://www.cpe.rutgers.edu/courses/current/ew0201ca.html
