SUMMARY:Preservation in Practice: A Primer for Historic Preservation Commissions
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the American Planning Association – NJ Chapter and the NJ Historic Preservation Office\, this one-day workshop is open to all preservationists\, but specifically geared toward those serving on a local commission. This program is designed to benefit both new and experienced commission members as well as being relevant for planning and zoning board members and elected officials. The course provides an in-depth examination of current topics and issues relevant to integrating preservation into community planning and zoning. Focus will be on legal parameters for implementing a commission\, what to include in a good municipal preservation ordinance\, conducting an effective public meeting\, and developing good guidelines to support decision making. Instructors: Dorothy Guzzo and Guest Speakers; Date: Saturday\, March 3; Time: 9 am– 4 pm; Cost: $75 \nDrew University’s Certificate in Historic Preservation Program invites community members to explore preservation in New Jersey by participating in courses being offered this winter and spring! DESCRIPTION:Click Here to Register \nThis year DRMI will focus on two vexing issues—getting the word out and cultivating more volunteers to help your downtown program. \nWe are assuming that your downtown program already has a good relationship with the local media\, and publishes your own paper newsletter or e-newsletter\, but what other components can you add to your public relations arsenal to get broader name recognition for your program and for the quality merchants on your street? Ultimately your Downtown Management program needs to become an opinion leader in town by tying national (and even international) events to the impact they make on your downtown\, so we will discuss how to be more “quotable.” \nThe afternoon will focus on the changing nature of volunteerism\, and now your local program can respond to volunteers interested in only short term or bite sized assignments. We will also discuss how the role of the Team chairperson must change given the casual nature of many volunteer assignments. Prior to starting her firm eight years ago\, Ms. Harris was state coordinator for the Illinois Main Street program for two years and the manager of the Illinois suburban Main Street program for four years. During her tenure\, Ms. Harris served 56 Illinois Main Street communities\, led a staff of 12 and managed a budget of over a million dollars. Prior to her Main Street career\, Ms. Harris spent 15 years as an executive director of three start-up and two mature preservation organizations\, each with its own organizational and fundraising challenges. \nSince starting her firm\, Ms. Harris has worked with state and local Main Street programs in 18 states. She has spoken for the last six years at the National Main Street Center annual conference about a wide variety of Organization topics. AltaMira Press published her book New Solutions for House Museums: Ensuring the Long-Term Preservation of America’s Historic Houses in 2007. In 2011 Heritage Consulting Inc. won the prestigious Grand Jury Award from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia for its yearlong project Delaware County (PA) Public History Feasibility Study and Implementation Plan. She has also written four feature articles in The National Trust Main Street Center’s monthly journal Main Street News\, and scholarly articles in the American Association for State and Local History’s History News and the National Trust’s Forum Journal.

A systems-based approach to town planning which includes an analysis of eight essential town systems: social\, commerce\, mobility\, food\, water\, waste\, energy and biological\, will set the framework for the discussion. Suggestions for incremental\, phased-in and decentralized strategies that include clean energy as a part of redevelopment projects will be discussed. Specific topical areas of discussion include: Incorporating technology policy into urban planning\, New transportation policies that can positively and negatively affect energy usage\, Urban form and design strategies that can harness natural energy\, Tool kit ideas for specific design issues\, Code and regulatory suggestions for integrated clean energy. Upon completion of the session\, attendees will understand: Energy issues and their relationship to town planning and design\, The relationship between holistic town planning and energy systems engineering\, The key elements in developing a strategic energy plan for a complex organization\, The variety of program options available to planners when attempting to affect energy usage in a community\, and How strategic energy plans can combine concepts of efficiency improvements with land use policies.
