SUMMARY:Highway Bus Rapid Transit (CM |1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Bus Rapid Transit – or BRT – is bus service that includes enhanced travel ways\, stations and equipment. BRT offers passengers faster\, more reliable service than traditional bus service. It does so by providing more frequent service and reducing traffic delays by giving BRT vehicles priority over general traffic. This type of service can be implemented faster less expensively than rail transit while still offering many of the same attributes and benefits as rail transit. Because the public is relatively unfamiliar with BRT\, public education and marketing are very important to the success of this type of service. Early and frequent communication with transit users\, supporters and funders can help transit providers overcome stereotypes and misperceptions regarding bus usage\, speed and reliability that can hinder BRT or freeway BOS implementation. Freeway bus-on-shoulder is simply a technique to achieve transit priority on freeways. Just as bus rapid transit often includes running-way priority via dedicated lanes and signal priority\, bus-on-shoulder achieves priority by allowing bus operations on highway shoulders. Transit vehicles are allowed to travel on the shoulder when speeds decrease to a certain threshold on the mainline (typically 35 mph). Buses can then travel faster than the mainline traffic\, improving service reliability and making buses more competitive with personal automobiles. This increases ridership and builds and strengthens positive perceptions of bus transit and its provider. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Town Centers: their conditions to success\, economic opportunity\, and preferences toward inviting\, walkable places (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:The success of several town center developments during the late 1990’s/early 2000’s dispelled conventional wisdom regarding the superiority of enclosed suburban shopping malls\, demonstrating in economically measurable ways a preference by many toward open-air\, mixed-use\, pedestrian-oriented places with attractive public space. What followed was a frenzy of town center and lifestyle center development—including well-conceived projects and poorly-conceived ones—that thrived\, met expectations\, or failed. Dismissed by some as artificial urban replicas\, successful town centers nevertheless serve as value-adding catalysts for other land uses\, such as office and hotel\, and provide a model for a better-integration of uses than is found at conventional shopping centers and office parks. While typically found at suburban interchange locations\, town centers offer valuable lessons for existing retail districts; further\, town centers have\, in some instances\, been successfully integrated into urban environments. This session highlights many of the conditions (with emphasis on market analysis and urban design) that lead to viable town centers\, primarily through case study of town centers across the country. Case studies of public/private partnerships will also be provided. The success of the town center strategy\, which focuses on the creation of great places to create value premiums\, has broad implications for planning\, since it has provided market validation of a number of planning and urban design principles. That these successes have occurred\, often in the absence of regional policies that support placemaking\, could point to a broader cultural shift and future support for place-friendly policies. \nClick here to register.

DESCRIPTION:For some time now\, many planners have struggled to demonstrate to the public how development that embraces new urbanist principles can benefit a community rather than increase traffic\, increase crime\, increase demand on services\, which is a common perception of new urbanism and all of which we as planners know to be typical planning myths. The purpose of this session is to present how many communities are rethinking their long-term development policies that may once have embraced low-density\, suburban development to incorporate more new urbanism principles such as a focus on infill development over greenfield development; a desire to create walkable neighborhoods with access to local businesses; and an understanding that high-density development is not the “plague” on society that some of the public may once have believed. This change in policy direction is often the direct result of a comprehensive planning effort that strives to engage the public in a transparent\, open dialogue with a strong educational component on the benefits of new urbanism. This webcast will look at how a number of communities have succeeded in shifting their development policies to embrace new urbanism through the comprehensive planning process. The intent of this session is to outline how the comprehensive planning process is an ideal setting to introduce\, educate\, or reevaluate the incorporation of new urbanism principles in the future development and redevelopment of a community. SUMMARY:I-70 Corridor – Dedicated Truck Lane Feasibility Study (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:The $3.75 million\, two-phased study evaluated the feasibility of adding dedicated truck lanes through Missouri\, Illinois\, Indiana\, and Ohio. The Study evaluates if Dedicated Truck Lanes address the congestion and safety problems and needs on the corridor and improve the regions’ economic competitiveness more than general purpose lanes capacity additions or maintaining the corridor as it is today. The study included working with a coalition of 4 state DOTs and included outreach and involvement activities to the MPOs\, private sector industries and motor carriers along the corridor. \nClick here to register for this event.

DESCRIPTION:APA-NJ Partnership with NJRI\nRedevelopment is a procedure used to revitalize distressed neighborhoods\, address the effects of underused and neglected parcels and enhance the economic conditions of a municipality. Accompanied by sound planning and execution\, redevelopment ultimately allows residents\, stakeholders and local government officials to produce invaluable changes to our communities. \nThe purpose of this course is to further educate locally appointed and elected municipal officials and community based organizations about the Redevelopment process. More specifically\, this course will: \n\nDiscuss the roles and responsibilities of participants in the redevelopment process\nProvide illustrative examples of short- and long-term impacts that planning board decisions may and have produced on developing\, distressed and/or vibrant communities and downtown corridors; and\nIdentify and explain legislation\, regulatory tools and incentives that are used in the redevelopment process.\n\nFinally\, this course will provide grassroots organizations with information that will enable them to sufficiently communicate with participants in the redevelopment process when initiatives are envisioned\, initiated or underway in their communities. \nClick here to register

DESCRIPTION:This National Academies of Sciences study produced a comprehensive\, concise guide for public decision makers and land use planners on the impacts land use design and policies and regulations on freight movements within urban areas. The guidebook is written in a jargon-free manner and explains why it is important for local elected and appointed officials to understand how goods move within their urban area\, why efficient movement is critical to their community’s urban quality of life\, how land use codes\, policies and regulation impact urban goods movement. The guidebook includes: an overview of who\, what\, how and why freight moves in an urban area; twelve original supply chain descriptions with narratives (beverage supply chain shown below) to help decision makers and planners understand the impacts of local zoning policies and regulations; examples of the impacts of regulations; a process for integrating an urban goods movement study into the work of a planning office; information on how to use freight data; examples of a variety of urban goods movement problems and solutions that they can use; and nine case study of urban areas that have changed zoning codes\, regulations and policies to improve freight movements in their urban area. \nClick here to register.

Healthy food retailing is an economic development strategy that increases sales of healthy foods through distributing\, stocking and marketing healthy items in affected communities. This session will cover the basic new markets model framework\, best practices\, local policy and planning priorities for healthy food retailing.
