DESCRIPTION:Come explore Orange’s Valley Arts District – a strikingly rich multicultural community nested in the Valley of West Orange and Orange. This is a terrific opportunity for planners to uncover the history and vibrant culture in the Valley Arts District. This area of Orange and West Orange has been experiencing a true renaissance where residents and visitors can now enjoy theatre\, arts education\, locally grown foods\, affordable artist live-work space\, public art\, and live music all within easy walking distance of each other and public transportation. This revitalization has been spurred by the Housing and Neighborhood Development Services (HANDS)\, Inc in their efforts to provide long-term affordable commercial arts and residential spaces to attract artists to the developing neighborhood. \nThe narrated one hour walk will include a tour of former industrial and commercial buildings rehabilitated by HANDS and now occupied by local artists\, innovators\, entrepreneurs and arts-based non-profit organizations. In addition to learning about the work of HANDS\, you’ll discover Orange’s origins as New Jersey’s “Hat City\,” see some hidden gems and get a peek at the growing artist community. Highlights along the tour will include examples of a community earth oven\, a hydroponic greenhouse\, a youth arts studio\, No Name Hat Factory formerly owned by the Stetson brothers\, and much more. New Jersey Monthly magazine consistently ranks Hopewell Borough as one of the “10 best small towns in NJ” and one of the “25 best places to call home in the Garden State.”  In 2012\, Hopewell Borough’s main thoroughfare\, Broad Street (CR 518)\, was named a Great Place in New Jersey by the American Planning Association-New Jersey Chapter (APA-NJ). Great Places offer better choices for where and how people work and live. They are enjoyable\, safe and desirable\, places where people want to live\, work and visit every day.  New Jersey’s great streets\, neighborhoods and public spaces are defined by many criteria\, including architectural features\, accessibility\, functionality and community activity. \nBroad Street\, with its many unique restaurants\, unique and antique shops\, specialty service or professional establishments and centuries-old residences\, is the focal point of the community. A concerted effort by town officials\, business owners and residents to retain the character\, charm and historic integrity of the Borough lead to funding in 2005 from NJDOT through a federal Transportation Enhancement (TE) grant to begin streetscape improvements in the central business district.  Phase I of the project included the removal of deteriorated concrete and bituminous sidewalk and curbing\, installation of new red and grey brick sidewalks\, hitching posts\, landscaping\, pedestrian scale lighting\, and other improvements.  Encouraged by the success of Phase I\, the Borough sought funding for Phase 2 for an additional $917\,000 grant from the NJDOT TE grant program in 2008 to continue the work.  Phase 2 improvements\, which added new handicap sidewalk ramps\, street furniture and ornamental planters in addition to the elements in Phase I\, were completed in 2011.  Supplementing the partnership with the State and federal government through grants\, the County of Mercer assisted with additional streetscape improvements. These improvements have accomplished much to increase pedestrian safety and slow vehicular travel\, so much so that Hopewell Borough is now featured as a key model for the Complete Streets initiative.  \nPlease join APA-NJ as it celebrates one of its 2012 Great Place in New Jersey award winners with a Walking Tour of Broad Street\, Hopewell Borough.  The Hopewell Borough Mayor\, Council members and other local stakeholders will walk with us and discuss the efforts made to retain the historic qualities of the area while seeking and investing grant monies into streetscape improvements.  Members are invited to attend a Cruise Night on Friday\, May 10th from 5pm to 8pm to see Broad Street as an active center of community life and return on Saturday morning\, May 11th from 10 am to noon for a walking tour with Borough officials to discuss the various factors that went into keeping Hopewell’s Broad Street such a unique place.  2 CM credits will be sought for the Saturday morning walking tour. \n\n\n\n\n		\n				\n						\n		\n								\n			\n		\n							\n			\n				\n						\n		\n								\n			\n		\n							\n			\n				\n						\n		\n								\n			\n		\n							\n			\n				\n						\n		\n								\n			\n		\n							\n			\n				\n						\n		\n								\n			\n		\n							\n			\n				\n						\n		\n								\n			\n		\n							\n			\n				\n						\n		\n								\n			\n		\n							\n			\n				\n						\n		\n								\n			\n		\n							\n			\n	\n	\n	\n\n

As planners and economic developers\, we have a duty to our clients to provide sound advice and analysis to protect the interest of the municipality\, and ultimately the taxpayers. In this webinar\, BB&K telecommunications attorneys will provide an overview of the challenges and opportunities facing local governments as they attempt to protect local interests while complying with federal requirements governing zoning of wireless facilities and to defeat damaging state legislative proposals that are sweeping the nation. SUMMARY:The Changing Role of Public Housing Authorities in the Affordable Housing Delivery System (CM | 1.5)
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginnings of the public housing program\, public housing authorities (PHAs) in the U.S. have transformed from entirely public endeavors-funded by the federal government – to agencies that must respond to market forces and that combine both public and private efforts. As the recession began\, PHAs were just beginning to experience the full effects of this transition. \n Using 13 cases studies of the largest PHAs in the Pacific Northwest Region\, this webinar outline what activities PHAs are undertaking in this devolved\, market-based context\, speculating about the future. PHAs make trade-offs among paths that emphasize agency survival\, producing more housing for the poorest households\, identification as a non-profit housing provider (rather than depending on HUD)\, poverty alleviation\, merging with another public agency\, or closing. This diversity of responses points to the under-valued attribute of public housing authorities as local organizations receiving diverse mandates from the federal government and as local housing providers. \nClick here to register.

DESCRIPTION:As bike sharing systems are proliferating in cities across the US\, and early systems in Boston and Washington\, DC are coming of age\, we examine the different metrics on which bike share programs can be evaluated. What does bike share success mean? Financial self-sufficiency\, or even profitability? Improved mobility? Improved public health? Reduced GHG emissions? How can we measure the cultural impact of bike share? Or should we simply be concerned about operational success–keeping the trains running on time. \nObjectives: Participants will learn about the different methods of evaluating bike sharing systems\, and what each method can tell us. Analysis of the Hubway bike share system will be presented\, based on ridership\, survey\, and operational data.
