DESCRIPTION:Register\nIn 2015\, with the Pope and tons of visitors heading to town\, Philadelphia became the largest city in North America to legalize short-term residential rentals (such as ones listed on AirBnB\, HomeAway.com\, and through other booking agents). With changes to the city’s zoning and tax code\, a system was put into place that addressed the interests of property owners renting spare rooms and entire units\, the guests they hosted\, neighbors and traditional hotel operators. An interdisciplinary group worked together to ensure local legislation matched the reality of activity already occurring and the needs of the community. This session will cover the challenges faced and policy options considered\, plus a comparison to other cities and counties across the United States.

The webinar will examine major U.S. tools for assessing the sustainability of neighborhoods\, cities\, and their components\, including: 2030 Districts\, APA Sustaining Places\, EcoDistricts Protocol\, Enterprise Green Communities\, Envision for infrastructure\, LEED for Neighborhoods\, LEED for Cities & Communities\, Living Community Challenge\, STAR Community\, Sustainable SITES\, and WELL District. Caton\, FAICP\, PP– Phil Caton has directed land use programming\, site planning and redevelopment initiatives for public agencies and as a private consultant for over 35 years. Mr. Caton has prepared Redevelopment Plans for most of New Jersey’s large cities\, including: Trenton\, Camden\, Jersey City and Elizabeth. Phil is an acknowledged expert in affordable housing and in the Transfer of Development Rights (TDR). \nStuart Meck\, PhD\, FAICP\, PP – Stuart is an associate research professor and previous director of the Center for Planning Practice in the Bloustein School. He teaches planning law\, planning and land use administration\, history and theory of planning\, ethics in planning and public policy\, and transportation impact analysis for development proposals. A specialist in planning statute reform and land use controls\, Stuart is a former national president of the American Planning Association\, has 44 years of experience as a professional planner\, researcher\, and municipal administrator\, and has written widely on planning and land use controls. \nJ. Michael Cobb\, PhD\, FAICP\, PP – Michael has over thirty years of international experience in urban\, regional and environmental infrastructure planning and development for projects in SE Asia\, Africa\, Latin America\, the Middle East and the US. Although his current IDC work focuses on adaptation to climate change in developing countries\, he previously was head of Urban and Infrastructure Planning for Bechtel Corporation’s worldwide operations\, and has also served as an executive with Planning Research Corporation\, AECOM\, the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority in Jordan\, and has been an adjunct faculty member at PennDesign teaching international development. \nDavid N. Kinsey\, PhD\, FAICP\, PP – David has been a planner in private practice since1984\, specializing in affordable housing planning; he also has been teaching planning at Princeton University since 1998. This presentation will highlight resources to help communities go from opportunistic to strategic green infrastructure planning: Considering Climate Change in Coastal Conservation Planning – an online resource that provides six succinct steps\, key resources for each\, and links to the full guidance developed; Green Infrastructure Mapping Guide – an online tutorial to help spatial analysts use GIS to prioritize green infrastructure to help reduce storm surge and sea level rise impacts; A Guide to Assessing Green Infrastructure Costs and Benefits for Flood Reduction – a six-step watershed based approach to documenting the costs of flooding due to precipitation\, projecting increased flooding and associated costs under future land use and climate conditions\, and calculating the benefits and costs of reducing flooding with green infrastructure over the long term; Green Infrastructure Protective Services Animation – helps community members and local decision-makers better understand the storm protection benefits from green infrastructure.

As the vast majority of older adults want to age in place\, they are creating a demand for communities that are age friendly. Age-friendly communities are friendly to all ages\, not just older adults. Ultimately\, young and old want the same things: an environment that allows them to participate and thrive. Financing age-friendly initiatives do not have to be costly. Planners and local governments should give attention to multigenerational planning and the work underway in cities developing more age-friendly communities – from New York to Honolulu – who are taking creative steps to build their adaptive capacity\, optimize opportunities and cultivate synergies for community change.
