DESCRIPTION:2/23-4/2  14 CM Credits \nUsing land use planning measures to respond to advance sustainability and resilience of both the natural and built environment requires at least a basic understanding of the environment and of ecological principles. The American Planning Association has recently established a Certified Environmental Planner credential in recognition of the expertise required in these areas. This will be a seminar style course encouraging interaction and shared knowledge among participants in identifying planning measures that are appropriate to address the relationships between and among land uses and ecological systems. The course will begin with an introduction to how the environment works and how to find and use environmental data. DESCRIPTION:The “Impacts and Opportunities of an Aging Population” webinar will explore the new world that is being created by the seismic demographic shift that begins on January 1\, 2011 when the first of the Baby Boomer generation celebrates their 65th birthday. Over the next 20 years (2030) the older adult population will double to 71 million and\, by 2050\, the population of our seniors will be equal to that of our youth (109\,090\,000 vs 109\,147\,000).  The sheer number of people growing older will create more demand for walkable neighborhoods and mixed used developments that place businesses and services used by an older population in close proximity to residential neighborhoods.  Communities that have also incorporated universal design standards into their overall planning and building codes will also be in a better position to enable their residents to “age in place” in naturally occurring retirement communities – thereby reducing the demand for high-cost institutional care.  The impact and opportunities of an aging population goes beyond traditional city planning and extends into public policy and strategic planning.  An increasingly frail population can impact the usage of traditional government services such as 9-1-1 emergency services\, can increase local prison costs and can increase the Medicaid match that local governments are responsible.  Although there are significant challenges that communities face with an increasingly older population base\, there are tremendous opportunities a retirement population brings including a strong core of volunteers\, a population that discretionary income and a population with a desire to contribute.  \nThis webcast is sponsored by the Florida Chapter. \nRegister Online:  https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/610107874

DESCRIPTION:The Future City Competition is a part of the National Engineers Week activities; the program was developed for seventh and eighth grade students to help them discover and foster interests in math\, science and engineering. The team that wins the regional competition each year receives an all-expense paid trip to the national finals in Washington\, DC in February. \nThere is a demand for Judges on the day of competition. Learners will build practical knowledge and skills by applying what they learn to communities of their choice. No previous design or architectural skills are necessary for this class. At the end of the class\, learners will be able to assess design proposals more professionally and thoughtfully. This will help them to enhance their work in zoning\, community and economic development\, transportation planning and virtually any urban planning or policy issue that involves the design of spaces. Since we al! l intuitively understand urban design\, and “good” urban design can be subjective\, learners are encouraged to share their knowledge and ideas. In addition to the evenings lectures\, two Friday afternoon field trips are planned to Hoboken and Jersey City where students will have the opportunity to visit adaptive re-use projects and a transfer of development rights project. DESCRIPTION:1/5-2/12 \nInstructor:  L. Nicolas Ronderos is Senior Planner for Community Development at Regional Plan Association. His work focuses on the interrelation between transportation\, land use and real estate. Bringing together a regional perspective  with local planning knowledge and development expertise has enabled him to fashion solutions for communities big and small. At the center of this juncture zoning plays an important role: it relates potential growth\, actual capacity and smart  development. As land use and zoning specialist for RPA\, Nicolas is charged with analyzing municipalities existing codes to assess their design performance and real estate implications\, giving public testimony and evaluation of zoning actions and helping shape new language to guide development. RPA works in the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut Metropolitan Area and this has allowed him to work in different types of communities from New York City to the suburban fringe. Nicolas holds a B.A. in Anthropology with a minor in History of Technology  from Los  Andes University and a Masters of Science in Urban Policy Analysis and Management from The New School University.
