DESCRIPTION:Managing a Supply Chain on a Shoestring Budget \nThe Community FoodBank of New Jersey’s 280\,000 square foot facility in Hillside\, NJ distributes 3 million pounds of food a month. Using their fleet of 19 trucks\, the FoodBank picks up from major supporters\, including Shoprite\, as well as organized food drives and federal programs. SUMMARY:New Urbanism and Communities of Color (CM | 2.0)
DESCRIPTION:New Urbanism has gained considerable acceptance in the last 20 years\, it remains controversial in a number of circles. Many critics believe that\, while the New Urbanism contains many attractive ideas\, it has not been able to effectively deal with a wide range of issues associated with inner-city communities and metropolitan growth that simply did not exist in the early twentieth century when it’s planning and design predecessors were being implemented. This workshop will address these concerns as well as carefully look into the principles of New Urbanism and its application in urban settings while taking a retrospective approach to developing a clearer understanding of urban settlement patterns in communities of color\, identifying typologies of traditional neighborhood design\, and explore place-determinants to help further develop a knowledge-base of meaningful precedents. This in turn\, can be applied to the development of future self-sustaining and livable communities. \nThe intent of this workshop will be to convey a thoughtful and selective awareness of New Urbanism principles and traditions with the effort to assist the contemporary community planner in deriving relevant strategies for the desired New Urbanism as it should more effectively respond to the social\, economic and physical needs of inner-city communities. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:A Complete Streets Workshop\, focused on providing municipal and county officials with information on planning for Complete Streets in both suburban and rural areas.  \nThe event is being sponsored by the County of Sussex\, and in cooperation with Morris and Warren Counties\, the NJDOT and the Sussex County YMCA.  \nThe Complete Streets Workshop will feature presenters from NJDOT\, from Michael Baker Jr.\, The RBA Group\, and will also include two transportation attorneys who will address liability concerns with respect to Counties and municipalities.  \nThe workshop will also include case studies from a County and municipal perspective demonstrating that there is no singular design prescription for Complete Streets; each one is unique and responds to its community context. A complete street in a rural area will look quite different from a complete street in a highly urban area\, but both are designed to balance safety and convenience for everyone using the road.  \nRegistration is limited to the first 100 registrants. DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 2010\, the South Dakota Supreme Court unanimously upheld a circuit court appeal of a special assessment levied by the City of Pierre to replace curb and gutter. The Supreme Court decision confirming a “taking” had occurred ended a long process which began with a special assessment notice to the affected citizens in the December of 2007. The presentation will focus on balancing the special assessment fee with the “special benefits” that must be received by the assessees to avoid a “takings.” The presentation will also discuss community organizing\, preparation to become a witness\, and the AICP Code of Ethics. The presenter was a witness\, an assessee and petitioner in the case\, a community organizer\, and assisted in preparing the legal briefs. DESCRIPTION:2/23-4/2  14 CM Credits \nUsing land use planning measures to respond to advance sustainability and resilience of both the natural and built environment requires at least a basic understanding of the environment and of ecological principles. The American Planning Association has recently established a Certified Environmental Planner credential in recognition of the expertise required in these areas. This will be a seminar style course encouraging interaction and shared knowledge among participants in identifying planning measures that are appropriate to address the relationships between and among land uses and ecological systems. The course will begin with an introduction to how the environment works and how to find and use environmental data. Participants will choose an issue regarding air\, water\, land or other environmental impacts and examine how planning solutions mitigate or merely shift these impacts. DESCRIPTION:The “Impacts and Opportunities of an Aging Population” webinar will explore the new world that is being created by the seismic demographic shift that begins on January 1\, 2011 when the first of the Baby Boomer generation celebrates their 65th birthday. Over the next 20 years (2030) the older adult population will double to 71 million and\, by 2050\, the population of our seniors will be equal to that of our youth (109\,090\,000 vs 109\,147\,000).  The sheer number of people growing older will create more demand for walkable neighborhoods and mixed used developments that place businesses and services used by an older population in close proximity to residential neighborhoods.  Communities that have also incorporated universal design standards into their overall planning and building codes will also be in a better position to enable their residents to “age in place” in naturally occurring retirement communities – thereby reducing the demand for high-cost institutional care.  The impact and opportunities of an aging population goes beyond traditional city planning and extends into public policy and strategic planning.  An increasingly frail population can impact the usage of traditional government services such as 9-1-1 emergency services\, can increase local prison costs and can increase the Medicaid match that local governments are responsible.  Although there are significant challenges that communities face with an increasingly older population base\, there are tremendous opportunities a retirement population brings including a strong core of volunteers\, a population that discretionary income and a population with a desire to contribute.  \nThis webcast is sponsored by the Florida Chapter. \nRegister Online:  https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/610107874
