The PP Exam Review Course for the May 2013 test period will be held Saturday, April 6 from 8:30AM to 4:00PM, at the Thompson Park Visitor Center’s Beech Room, 805 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, NJ 07738.  A light breakfast and lunch will be served. The Review Course is expected to cover general exam topics including the State Plan, environmental regulations, affordable housing, Planning Board and Board of Adjustment activities, MLUL, regional planning entities, and other material relative to the PP Exam. Additionally, all students will receive a complimentary copy of the 2010 Complete Guide to Planning in New Jersey.

2013 NJ History and Historic Preservation Conference – June 6

Call for Sessions

The 2013 conference planning committee is seeking proposals for the first annual history and historic preservation conference.  In 2013 the NJ Historic Preservation Conference and the History Issues Convention will be merged to become the NJ History and Historic Preservation Conference.  The conference will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at the Newark Museum in Newark, NJ.  Proposals are due on November 30, 2012 and may be submitted for a panel session or in workshop format.  Selections will be made by January 14, 2013.

This year the conference planning committee is seeking exciting proposals that focus on:

• Non-profit board development and capacity building (with case studies)
• Revitalization in urban areas
• Architectural design guidelines incorporated into redevelopment area plans (with case studies)
• Architectural case studies illustrating technology and green building principles in historic properties
• Urban archaeology particularly in the Newark area

The conference planning committee will also consider proposals that reflect the complexities and challenges of preserving and interpreting our heritage and that would be relevant to a diverse audience.  Some examples include, but are not limited to, the following topic areas:

• Case studies illustrating conservation and craftsmanship
• Preservation approaches that incorporate sustainable techniques
• Case studies that illustrate innovative planning documents for historic sites and/or history museums
• Examples of innovative stewardship and/or reuse of historic sites
• Innovative archaeological investigations
• Case studies illustrating innovative uses of new technologies, especially related to reaching new or underserved audiences
• Public policy, advocacy, demographic change, planning tools and techniques
• Economics of preservation in the current climate
• Heritage tourism
• Case studies or examples of projects, programmatic or strategic planning processes and partnerships (executed or planned) designed to engage diverse audiences

Proposals must be submitted electronically in the desired format and designed to fit into one of the following time slots:

- Panel sessions (75 minutes) can have up to three speakers addressing case studies or other talks related to the topic

- Workshops (135 minutes) present a detailed hands-on approach teaching attendees about good history/historic preservation practices/issues

- Tours (walking/bus/transit) minimum 90 minutes – maximum 3 hours in length

All facility rooms will have power point capability. Alternative AV requirements should be identified in the proposal.

The conference planning committee retains sole discretion in the selection of proposals.  Proposals not selected may be retained for future events. Registration fees will be discounted for selected moderators, presenters and panelists.

Call for Candidate Nominations – Due Monday, August 27, 2012

The nomination period for the APA-NJ 2012 Election cycle is underway. If you have ever thought about joining the APA-NJ Executive Committee there is no better time than now.  Join our group of dedicated professionals to make a difference in our Chapter and beyond.  You may nominate by completing the submission form below.  Questions can be directed to APA-NJ Secretary/Elections Committee Chair Bonnie N. This year we have eight positions up for election. They include President, Vice President of Policy, Vice President of Public Relations, Northeast Area Representative, Northwest Area Representative, Central Area Representative, Southern Area Representative and Southern Shore Area Representative.  Elections will occur in mid-September and voting will be open for a minimum thirty (30) days.

President:

The term of President runs for 3 years beginning November 1, 2013. The President shall first take office as President Elect for 1 year beginning November 1, 2012 and shall assume the role of President on November 1, 2013. The duties shall include the following:

• Call meetings of the Chapter and the Executive Committee
• Preside at these meetings
• Create and, except as otherwise provided in these Bylaws, appoint, discharge, and serve as a non-voting, ex officio member of all committees
• Execute any contracts authorized by the Executive Committee
• Establish and discharge any committees as may be necessary unless otherwise provided for in the Bylaws
• Oversee the development and the annual update of the Chapter Administrative Procedures and Policy Manual and present it to the Executive Committee for action
• Oversee the administration of the Strategic Plan and Work Program of the Chapter;
• Oversee the preparation of a draft annual Strategic Plan and Work Program and draft budget and submit same to the Executive Committee prior to January 1st
• Represent the Chapter on the APA Chapter Presidents Council
• Represent the Chapter before the APA and its Board of Directors and staff, unless said President shall specifically delegate such authority for particular functions to a Chapter member
• Perform such other duties as are customary to the office.

The duties of the President-Elect shall include:

• The President-Elect shall be elected one year prior to the end of the term of the Chapter President, and shall replace the Immediate Past-President of the Chapter as a voting member of the Executive Committee for said term;
• Assume the duties and responsibilities of President at such time as the office becomes prematurely vacant as provided in Article V.2 (g);
• Carry out any other duties assigned by the President.

Vice President of Policy (VPP):

The term of Vice President of Policy runs for 2 years beginning November 1, 2012. The duties shall include the following:

• Oversee the Chapter’s legislative affairs and advocacy program
• Serve as Chair of the Legislative Committee
• Coordinate with and assist the chairs of any topical committee(s) established to advance the policy initiatives of the Chapter, aka policy committee(s)
• Report on topical policy committee(s) activities and concerns at each Executive Committee meeting, and serve as a non-voting, ex officio member of said committee(s);
• Assume the duties and responsibilities of President at such time as the office becomes prematurely vacant and until such time as a new President is installed as provided in Article V.2 (d) and (e)
• Carry out any other duties assigned by the President.

Vice President of Public Relations (VPPR):

The term of Vice President of Public Relations runs for 2 years beginning November 1, 2012. The duties shall include the following:

• Serve as the official Chapter Editor of the The Jersey Planner
• Serve as chair of the Public Relations Committee
• Maintain relations with the press, through creation and distribution of press releases and editorials
• Oversee the promotion of National Community Planning Month
• Ensure webpage content is current and relevant
• Carry out any other duties assigned by the President

Area Representatives

All five (5) Area Representatives are up for election this year. The term of each representative runs for 2 years beginning November 1, 2012. Each Area Representative serves as liaison with the Chapter members of his/her area. The areas are divided as follows:

- The Northeast Area consists of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union counties
- The Northwest Area consists of Morris, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon and Somerset counties
- The Central Area consists of Mercer, Middlesex and Monmouth counties
- The Southern Area consists of Ocean, Burlington, Camden and Gloucester Counties
- The Southern Shore Area consists of Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem Counties

As well as being liaison for Chapter members, Area Representatives:

• Arrange social and educational programming for his/her area
• Serve on the Professional Development Committee
• Carry out any other duties assigned by the President

The next City Planner Book Club meetup will be at a TBD location in New Jersey in late September. The book for the upcoming quarter will be “Crabgrass Frontier: The Suburbanization of the United States”.

The City Planner Book Club is a collaboration between APA-NJ and APA-NY that discusses a book chosen quarterly amongst planners. There is an active online forum to discuss the book. Meetups are at changing locations in New Jersey and New York, and are eligible for 1.5 CM credits.
